http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/carrie-underwood-comes-out-in-support-for-gay-marr"As a married person myself, I don't know what it's like to be told I can't marry somebody I love, and want to marry," she said. "I can't imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love."
Carrie's endorsement is particularly important because a large portion of her fan base is conservative. It should be interesting to see how they react.

(146,333 posts)If they convince others to also support marriage equality, they have done a very good service.

(10,893 posts)When a person has fans who could be on any side of the political spectrum, they risk alienating some people when making some type of stance. And this doesn't apply to just the music industry--it also could apply in sports and showbiz. That's why I believe celebs and pro athletes should never volunteer information about their personal politics or which politicians they donate to, whether they are conservatives or liberals.

(17,111 posts)That's their choice to make. If they want to support a certain cause they have every right to do so.
They have every right to voice their opinions even if it alienates some people who might buy their shoes (talking to you Michael Jordan).
Their willingness to take a stand may help bring about change.
When Jackie Robinson played for the Dodgers, the shortstop was PeeWee Reese. PeeWee was a good ol' country boy from Kentucky. One day some shite was being rained on Jackie's head, PeeWee went over and put his arm around Jackie's shoulders. That spoke volumes to one and all. They remained friends and Jackie's widow attended his funeral.
People in certain jobs aren't immune to social change. They are up to their necks in it whether they want to be or not. They might as well stand up for what they believe in.

(100,105 posts)Remember this was George W.'s wedge issue in 2000 and 2004 that got him into office in the first place. With stars like this speaking out now in 10 years we'll wonder why gay marriage was ever an issue tp begin with.

(1,063 posts)Even tho she lives in Nashville she has the ability to pull a A Shaina Twain and build a much larger fan base with or without country fans that may be turned off by that announcement.

(33,982 posts)But I think the number doing so will be smaller. We're winning on this issue.
And it won't hurt her that much, not to diminish the risk she's taken, but she does have fans outside strictly country circles.

(32,102 posts)I was a fan of the runner up that year - Bo Bice. But as much as I like Bo there have been glimpses of Carrie here & there that made her very appealing. She may be a country singer but she has come out for animals rights as well and is known to be a vegan. If she loses fans with that statement I have a feeling there will be new ones there to attend her concerts. She's a good singer and a good person.

(50,565 posts)I predict huge bonfires of Carrie Underwood CDs in front of every country radio station in America.
Fortunately for her, she is very pretty and has a nice voice. She will do well in the rock music field.
