Pakistani woman dies after being set on fire for rejecting marriage proposal

Maria Abbasi was baby-sitting a younger sister near Murree, Pakistan, when she was attacked, her family says.
Burns consumed 85% percent of Maria Abbasi's body, her family says. Three arrested in connection with killing; arrest warrant out for fourth person

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN)An 18-year-old Pakistani schoolteacher died Wednesday from injuries after her body was set on fire for refusing a marriage proposal, police said. The perpetrators beat Maria Abbasi, then drenched her in petrol and set her body ablaze before leaving her for dead, her family members told CNN.

"Maria was at home baby-sitting her 5-year-old sister while her family went to a funeral in a nearby town," said Rafaqat Abbasi, her uncle. "At the funeral her family was alerted that she 'was on fire.' Initially the thought was there had been some sort of accident, perhaps a pipe had burst or something."

The horror of what had happened set in Monday night when her family returned home to the village of Davel outside Murree in northeastern Pakistan."Maria was lying on the floor, with 85% of her body covered in burns," the uncle said.

Four men earlier had barged into her parents' home, said Murree police inspector Sohail Abbasi, who is no relation to the family.

besides the horror of anyone doing such a thing: in a deeply patriarchal culture, such as exists in Pakistan, isn't an unmarried woman considered to be under the guardianship of her father, and isn't his permission required for a woman to marry? Isn't it the norm in such a society for marriage to be a family affair, with the parents of the groom and the bride agreeing to the marriage? It seems to me that there must be more to this story.

Pakistan Woman Beaten, Burned to Death for Refusing Proposal

By The Associated Press

ISLAMABAD — Jun 1, 2016, 11:59 AM ET

A Pakistani police official says a female teacher has died after being beaten and set on fire for refusing a marriage proposal from a man twice her age.

Mohammad Ali said Wednesday that the woman, who was around 19 years old, was attacked two days earlier near the hilltop town of Murree, just outside the capital, Islamabad.

He says that after being brought to a hospital in Islamabad, the woman told police that relatives of the school principal attacked her for refusing the proposal from his son.

Such attacks are not uncommon in Pakistan, where nearly 1,000 women are killed each year in so-called "honor killings" for allegedly violating conservative norms on love and marriage.

For all of the region's problems, there isn't a hard and fixed standard of belief.

Perhaps the gang aproached her father and he told them to get bent until they asked her. Then she said no and they flipped out, hatching a plan to kill her. Who knows?

I'd like to see a few follow up "honor killings" in the wake of this sort of shit. Might nip this crap in the bud.

It makes me want to cry just thinking about the injustice of this and the horror of what her last moments must have been like. What the fuck is wrong with men in that culture? Why are they so filled with hatred toward women? How can they possibly justify such a thing?

What a sick, barbaric culture. I can't even say what I would like the fate of these evil men to be.

Soak them in kerosene and light a match. Put them out before they die. Let their families watch them hang on in agony for a few days, just like this poor woman's family had to. Maybe that will open their eyes to what raising your sons like barbarians results in. An eye for an eye is all people like that understand. Violence is their gold standard. Pay them. Shit might stop happening.

I'll take the hide. Fuck it.
