Godwin's law itself can be used as a distraction, diversion or even as censorship, fallaciously miscasting arguments against Trump as hyperbole when the comparisons to Trump are actually appropriate.

(52,791 posts)Sure, call Trump a Nazi. Just make sure you know what youre talking about.
The inventor of "Godwin's Law" about Hitler comparisons on the Internet says they're not always inappropriate.

(19,326 posts)that during their time together, Trump had a book that was his favorite and usual
bed-time reader, called "The Complete Collection of Hitler's Speeches", or some such.
It was NOT Mein Kampf. I'm sure he'd read that long ago .. but damn, knowing this
about The Donald really creeps me out.
This --together with Trump's well-known ties to the mob-- does not paint a hopeful
picture, and Hillary is no great shakes either.
Not to damn with faint praise, but she's certainly better than a Nazi-loving borderline
mobster.

The effect of these comparisons will depend on whether more people by into them. Perhaps there will be a Daisy Girl ad which blows Trump's chances out of the water. Problem is, many Republicans demonized Trump during the primaries, but failed and may have actually helped Trump win the nomination. Maybe it will be different in the general, but who knows?.
Accusations of the kind we're seeing have historically made by third parties and marginal groups against mainstream candidates. Accusers may think they've hit their mark, but if their audience thinks it's overblown, the speaker just appears small and panicked. NBC, CBS, ABC, and CNN have been painfully evenhanded during most elections, but if this is a common theme they pretty much turn into Fox.

(58,670 posts)Although I think the proper comparison is to Mussolini. If you look at videos of the two together, you see a lot of the same gestures and mannerisms. Berlusconi comes to mind as well. Trump would probably be more purely fascistic than Nazi-istic IMHO. But that's like the difference between getting your throat cut or your head chopped off. Not much good to be said about either.
