Donald Trump, the petty, vindictive real estate heir who has become the Republican presidential nominee thanks to a combination of insults and a promise to build a big wall, is having a pretty good week. Last Friday he was endorsed by the NRA, on Thursday he officially clinched the Republican nomination, then Fox News aired a documentary on his family that was praised as "like something you'd see on state-run television somewhere."
To top it off, a new ABC News/Washington Post poll showed him with an edge over Hillary Clinton in the general electionan edge earned at least in part by a sudden surge in his popularity among millennials. The survey reports a pretty major jump in the way young people view Trump: In March, Clinton had a 6425 lead among registered voters under 30, but as of May that gap had been narrowed to 4542. Her support dropped across all demographics in the new poll, but the fact that a huge number of twentysomethings were suddenly siding with the GOP was the big news.
Barack Obama beat Mitt Romney among young voters 6730 in 2012, and conventional wisdom is that millennials can't stand the Republican Party, particularly when it comes to social issues. So, what the fuck? Are young people actually turning to Trump?

(39,215 posts)going to. The millennials I know are well educated and know their history and/or understand where hate and fear can lead people to.
If they do not vote for Hillary if she is nominated they would be more likely to stay home. Which is really bad as we need to take the congress back.

(27,315 posts)The real risk is that some may stay home, however. None of my sons like her. They will eventually vote for her because they loath Trump, but they dislike her too. Both voted Sanders in the primary.
EL34x4
(2,003 posts)and then divulge that your own sons don't like her. So who's the outlier? This poll or your sons?
Why don't your sons liker her?
Mass
(27,315 posts)So, there is no contradiction.
And yes, the risk is young people not going to vote, not voting for Trump! Young people are generally not stupid and you have to be very stupid to vote Trump.
BTW, the article quoted above says the poll is an outlier.

(2,841 posts)That part about the SJWism might push some younger voters to Trump just out of spite; but I know alot of people who are tired of rampant political correctness (mostly in colleges that they attend and admins bending backwards for these fringe groups) but all of them HATE Trump and won't even think of voting for him.
If I had to use my friends as an example regarding the elections (were 24 to 29), our mentality is to vote for Clinton because we have to or not vote at all.

As screwed up as Kansas currently is, I'd take that over telling nearly half the country that they can't vote because I disagree with whom they would vote for.

(16,399 posts)....who now thinks Trump is cool because "he'll shake things up" and they want to watch the world burn. And probably spent the last eight years calling Obama a dork on the internet since his parents let him have a computer. And hails Ayn Rand, Rand Paul, Matt Stone and Trey Parker as his political compass.
Considering your daughters are voting for Gary Fucking Johnson, it now makes sense why you're so annoyed at all that.
SickOfTheOnePct
(7,290 posts)Since you hadn't even said any of that. Sadly, my mind reading skills have atrophied as I've aged.
I was just taken aback by you saying that only Democrats should be permitted to vote in the Presidential election.
SickOfTheOnePct
(7,290 posts)and of course, doesn't match what you said in your previous post, although the second one comes close.
Nope, if I had been annoyed by those comments, I would have responded to those comments. The comment that I responded to, and that is pretty scary, is your stance on only allowing Democrats to vote in Presidential elections.
ProudToBeBlueInRhody
(16,399 posts)Keep on "being scared", buddy. The real people to fear are the ones I cited voting for Republicans who are demonstrably stealing people's right to vote EVERY FUCKING DAY. Voted by the people for the people you're wasting time being so worried about me trashing.
But no, be "scared" by me, the big bad Democrat blowing off some steam on the interwebs. I'm the real enemy.
SickOfTheOnePct
(7,290 posts)Since you've done that, you're included in that group.

Edit: sorry, I just read the full post. My kids would never vote Johnson, but at least I can understand their vote.

(53,521 posts)And I say that as a lily-white guy. Millennial POC are not going to be voting for Der Drumpf.
Jesus Malverde
(10,274 posts)People like to treat POC's like they have no options other than the Democratic Party. However POC's are a diverse people with unique experiences.
The experiences of someone of Mexican descent, well assimilated into America or a Cuban american is totally different from many new immigrants. In California we have two main hispanic gang factions the surenos and the nortenos. One is of long standing americans of Mexican descent, the other of new comers. They have different experiences, outlooks, values and routinely kill each other. Some recent hispanic immigrants are all into the Pentecostal church because the catholics were too slack for them. Their outlook classic born again christian where do they fit in?
Asian Americans - Even more diverse. We call them asian but consider the differences between china, japan, korea, all the way to India.
Some indians are mega right wing. Some Chinese cut throat capitalists. Japanese and Koreans can be socially conservative. Thai's love a monarchy, Indonesia is a muslim nation. The Philippines extremely catholic.
Same goes for any other ethnic group. To assume they have no variety of opinions, perspectives, or political opinions other than the ones allowed to them and assumed of them because of they are people of color, is in itself a stereotype.
I was surprised when my Honduran friend said was going to vote for trump but she like any non POC has her own outlook on life, opinions, and most importantly uniqueness as an individual to make her own decision.
I doubt you would argue all millennial white people are going to vote for trump. Why would you argue all millennial POC are going to vote for Hillary or any other Democrat?

And Hillary is an incredibly bad politician and isn't exactly endearing herself to the young. Plus the Lefts love of white baiting will have an effect, the majority is still of European descent and I am sure the SJWism is probably going to take its toll.
Bernie capture that fire, but I suspect Clinton will never be able to hold it.

(14,566 posts)I know it is always popular to bash the youngest generation.
But, sorry, the older people get, the more close minded they get (generally) and the more they need confirmation of their personal beliefs, and the virulently they react to people who don't tell them what the want to hear.
The younger we are, the more open we are (again, generally) and the less restricted we are by our own beliefs.
This country is getting more stupid by the day, which is why Trump is the nominee for a major party for POTUS. But, the younger generation is not as bitten by the stupid he appeals to.
As noted, yeah, obviously some are into him. But, overall, what he is appealing to is not where they are at AND FURTHER, the younger we are, the more we are repulsed by phonies.
SO, while they like Bernie better than Hillary primarily for this reason, when paired against Trump, she may be phony, but not even remotely like the Donald.
End of they day, they either sit it out or mostly vote Hillary.
But Bernie supporters want us to believe that.

(1,290 posts)Taking one poll as fact is shaky enough, but doing so with a subgroup (where the MOEs tend to be much larger) is laughable. Most polling shows the younger generation still leaning heavily to the left, and Fascist Donald isn't going to change that.

While that's more of a comment on their characters and policies than their ages, I can personally say that I'm not remotely thrilled over the prospect of going from having a president born in the 1960s back to (yet another) one born in the 1940s.
