Trippy and poppy ain't really my thing these days, but I've heard three songs from this album now, and they're all better than any non-metal song I've heard in years.

EDITED TO ADD: I was one of the target audiences (little kids) of the original TV show and I ate that shit up. Even today I'll tell people that I've lost the ability to speak and the only word I can say anymore is "crayon."

The first of the month, right after payday, there were Pop-Tarts for an after school treat. Man oh man.

Also, he recorded his parts for the album separately over two days (he didn't want the others in the studio with him).

This song is written by Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard.

Micky said he wanted to sing it, but Nez claimed it first. Then the producer decided to go with a double-tracked vocal, which I think makes the song.

There is a more "rock and roll" version of it available as an alternate take on the extended edition.

It isn't immediately obvious which songs are from the 60s and which are from today.

I was able to download it via auto-rip even before UPS showed up with the CD itself.

It is much better than the few tracks they did in the 80s. With the loss of Davy Jones, I think this album was really about closure, not endless reunions (which I still like, too). It's got that delicate, embracing quality. Good antidote for a dreary day.

The best part was it was in a small venue only 10 or 15 minutes from my house. He actually passed by me to and from the stage, close enough that as he left I was able to say "Thank you". The man is still a fantastic singer, songwriter and storyteller.

I'm mixed on this album, but this "duet" with Mickey is fantastic. Their voices always complimented each other on the rare occasions they harmonized.

But it has that "Girl That I Knew Somewhere" sound which was really the Monkees bread and butter in their prime.

Love how they've just apparently said "fuck it" to "evolving" their style and decided to produce an album that sounds like their old stuff, albeit with new material.

And it sounds great!

Guess I'm gonna have to buy it. I've always loved the Monkees and thought they got way more shit than they deserved.

30. He hates them

May 2016

Quote from Peter Tork:

"Wenner doesn't care what the rules are and just operates how he sees fit. It is an abuse of power. I don't know whether the Monkees belong in the Hall of Fame, but it's pretty clear that we're not in there because of a personal whim. Jann seems to have taken it harder than everyone else, and now, 40 years later, everybody says, 'What's the big deal? Everybody else does it.' [Uses studio artists or backing bands.] Nobody cares now except him. He feels his moral judgment in 1967 and 1968 is supposed to serve in 2007."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Monkees#Rock_and_Roll_Hall_of_Fame

Wenner hates KISS too, btw. He and Dave Marsh blocked them for years. Same goes for Rush.

KISS were great in the '70s and they had a huge impact. They definitely belong in the HOF.

And not helped by the fact that Gene Simmons is monumental d-bag.

But YMMV. Taste is of course subjective. A lot of people can't stand my favorite band, too.

But KISS made some great records in their heyday. Most people that trash their music haven't really heard much of it.

Anyway, their impact is undeniable whether you like their music or not.

Mike McCready of Pearl Jam: "They were the Beatles to me. They are the reason I started playing music."

And it's not just him. I've heard many musicians say things like that about them. If you were the right age when they hit, they were a huge deal.

I've been a fan since I've been 3 and this is a great CD. I wasn't a fan of Pool It, but Justus was alright, but neither of those sounded like The Monkees of the 60's - this album does. Even the bonus tracks are great. So smart that they did a new album in the style of Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones ltd. I can't believe that Micky, at 71, sounds pretty much the same as he did in the 60's.
