14-year-old charged in dragging death

Matthew Jaramillo, 14, told detectives he was driving a stolen car when he picked up a prostitute and parked in an apartment complex lot ...
When a man told him to leave the parking lot, he told police he ran over him several times, dragging him to his death.

It’s not the first time Jaramillo has been in trouble with the law, according to court records.

He was charged with aggravated battery in July, and assault and battery a couple of months later, according to documents filed in Children’s Court.
He was arrested in late March and charged with the unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.

He was recently released to the custody of his mother and ordered to attend school, undertake random drug tests and wear a GPS ...

"He wasn’t even legally allowed to drive yet,” said officer Tanner Tixier, a spokesman for the Albuquerque Police Department.
“It is disconcerting that a 14-year-old is picking up a hooker in a stolen car and killing people.”

1. Clearly someone isn't looking closely at Jaramillo's problems.

He shouldn't be living at home. Nor should he be allowed to return to his high school; risking the safety of students in his school.

they are in detention now, but if they bond out, or if they're convicted and get probation, they will be back in school. The high school has at least one student who's on probation for aggravated assault. This is in a small town where everyone goes to the same school, so you have everyone from the entire socioeconomic spectrum in the same place. Schools are mandated to provide education for every child. If a student commits an offense on campus, they can segregate them in an alternative environment, or in some instances, expel them. If the crime took place off campus, there's little the school can do about it, unfortunately. I believe in providing every opportunity we can, even for those who aren't much interested in learning, because once in a while, the light does come one. But adolescents and teens with a documented history of criminal violence should not be in the same school with other children. It's a loophole that needs to be closed.

3. There are juvenile correction centers where the child can learn and receive needed counseling.

IMO: A child who drives a car dragging someone to their death should be kept away from society. (not to mention a hooker was part of this crime)
