Occupy Our Homes Faces Off With US Marshals in Washington
George Zornick on June 5, 2012 - 1:27 PM ET
Occupy Our Homes engaged in a dramatic faceoff this morning with US Marshals and local police in northeast Washington D.C., less than a mile from the US Capitol building. About thirty Occupiers arrived at the home of Dawn Butler around 8 am, in the 900 block of Maryland Ave NE, to block a looming evictionand what followed left one Occupier and one US Marshal in the hospital.
Butler doesnt own the home, but has rented it since 2006. Her landlord fell behind on her mortgage payments while sick with cancer, and the property was foreclosed onbut D.C. law says tenants have the first right of purchase on a home where the landlord loses the title. Butler claims she has repeatedly tried to buy the home but has been repeatedly ignored or thwarted by JP Morgan Chase and a local foreclosure firm.
An eviction notice came last night, and this morning the protesters showed up to help. They constructed a barrier of plastic milk crates at the front door of the property, barred the front gates and sat down in protest along the front steps.
Heavily armed US Marshals, however, made quick work of the protesters blockade. They forcibly removed both men and women, often picking them up by the head or neck. One Occupier suffered what appeared to be a serious concussion and was unconscious on the ground for several minutes and later taken to Howard University Hospital in an ambulance. ................(more)

(8,994 posts)Hardly anything surprising. The US Marshals have quite a checkered history. (The Fugitive Slave Act, anyone?)

(62,325 posts)after the destroyed the World's economies, doesn't it? Too bad they don't remember who they work for.
I have seen small town Sheriffs refuse to evict people though during these times, those are cops who know who work for the people though.
And btw, why were US Marshalls not sent to get Karl Rove to court to answer the Congressional Subpoena he thumbed his nose at? Don't know whatever happened to that subpoena.

(62,325 posts)And why was the tenant not allowed to buy that house?
People watching this in other countries must wonder about this great 'Democracy'. What a contrast to Ic eland where the government placed a moratorium on foreclosures and actually cared more about the people than the banks.
Thank YOU Occupy! For everything you are doing. No one else seems to be standing up for the people.

(62,325 posts)donations, and I know many, many people would want to help them with this kind of work, but I do not know where to donate.

(38,893 posts)so it depends upon your target area. NYC OWS sometimes help other Occupations in need so they may be a good start. I don't know their donation link, however. Thank you for thinking of them.
