Global Child Sex Tourism on the Rise, Dispite Efforts to Fight it

BANGKOK – The sexual abuse of children by tourists and travellers is a growing scourge around the globe that has largely managed to outwit attempts to curb it in the last two decades, a major study warned Thursday.

The landmark report released in Bangkok, South Africa and Washington makes for grim reading, with researchers concluding that “no region is untouched by this crime and no country is ‘immune”.

However, while it dwelt on many countries and cities where sex crimes against children is a serious problem, it never mentioned Thailand or Bangkok.

According to the report’s brief section on Thailand, “[C]hildren are becoming less visible and are a more risky prospect for foreign sex offenders and thus, perpetrators are venturing to more isolated locations…”

It cites the 2014 US Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report, which said Thailand denied entry to 79 known foreign child sex offenders in 2013.
