Oklahoma passes bill making performing abortions a felony

The Oklahoma Senate on Thursday passed a bill that would make it a felony to perform an abortion in the state, and if signed by Gov. Mary Fallin (R) would put it at odds with federal law.

Senate Bill 1552, sponsored by Republican state Sen. Nathan Dahm, passed with a 33-12 vote and no debate. The latest version of the bill cleared the House in late April, and it would automatically become law within five days if Fallin does not sign or does not veto.

"No person shall perform or induce an abortion upon a pregnant woman," the bill's language reads, striking through the clause "unless that person is a physician licensed to practice medicine in the State of Oklahoma. "

"Any person violating this section shall be guilty of a felony punishable by imprisonment for not less than one (1) year nor more than three (3) years in the State Penitentiary," the bill continues.

There are no conservative Democrats. There are moderates and liberals. One is pragmatic and the other is chasing a unicorn fantasy. On the supreme court alone, I would never vote republican contrary to what the Bernie supporters claim because their hissy fit over their candidate losing has them lashing out at everyone that doesn't agree with them.

Should we compromise, and let Oklahoma have their ban, so long as it doesn't affect other states?

Some of us don't think compromising on reproductive rights is reasonable. Is keeping abortion safe and legal in all 50 states a "unicorn fantasy" in your "moderate" world?

A lot of times, State governments will try to "make a statement" by voting to pass a law that flies directly in the face of established law. They know it will never stand up to Supreme Court scrutiny, but they usually try to word it in such a way that it only affects poor people and/or people who otherwise wouldn't have the wherewithal (financial or otherwise) to fight it all the way up to the Supreme Court.

This law targets DOCTORS. The ONE class of people who they KNOW will have the money and the backbone to fight it for as long as it takes (and to get the REALLY good lawyers on their side too). These Oklahoma Republican idiots would have been better off writing the bill so it punished the WOMEN who had the abortions. At least then they could hope that most of them wouldn't have the money to fight it, and the law would stand for a while.

And on a side note, every time I hear about Republicans bending over backwards to make abortion legal again, and to make gay marriage illegal, and to poke their grimy fingers into public restrooms, all I can think is.........this is the Party that claims to want to keep government OUT of your lives.

this doesn't look like it makes abortion illegal, at least one performed by a 'licensed physician,' which is of course a bit of a red herring in and of itself as it places more burden of regulation on the procedure.

What this seems to attack is the 'abortion pills' that have become a convenience to women everywhere. With this, it would seem a woman would need to go to a doctor's office to get the pill and would have to take it in his office. Any woman who took an abortifactant medication on her own would be subject to arrest and incarceration.

The bill that passed the legislature "struck through" the clause "unless that person is a physician licensed to practice medicine in the State of Oklahoma." It eliminates that clause & now simply reads that no one shall perform an abortion in the state.

The bill would prevent doctors from obtaining or renewing their license if they perform abortions. It would also subject them to 1-3 years in prison.

The only exceptions it provides are for the life of the mother and to remove a miscarried fetus.

He has other priorities.

"Senator Sanders agreed that Donald Trump's comments [on abortion] were shameful. But then he said they were a distraction from...'a serious discussion about the serious issues facing America.' To me, this is a serious issue," Clinton said at State University of New York at Purchase."

Just because it may be legal or illegal federally, doesn't mean states won't try to manipulate it. The worse that can happen to them is their law is overturned in federal court.

If the Republicans have the House and the Senate, two-thirds of the statehouses and governor's mansions, and a president with carte blanche to get his Supreme Court nominees approved, then you can say Sayonara to women's rights and much, much more, for generations to come.
