CHAPPELL, Neb. Bad debts and street drugs. Vandalism and burglaries. Assaults and underage drinking.
These are some of the crimes 44-year-old Deuel County Attorney Joel Jay investigates and prosecutes in one of western Nebraskas smallest rural counties.
The biggest mystery of his law career, however, is why a few dozen vintage Ku Klux Klan robes were boxed up decades ago and stashed in the attic of the old building where he houses his law offices.
Its a cold case that Jay says he is unlikely to solve, but he has learned a lot about the Klans Nebraska history in trying.
