Impeachment is off. Should I care? Is this good? Bad? The Olympics? Do the people want to see her ousted or do they want her to stay?

(12,958 posts)The Favelas were almost 100% black. Even our 'liberal' tour guide wouldn't admit it was racial when I asked why everyone in the Favelas were black and the rest of Rio was either mulatto or Portuguese.
There were no public hospital, just walled, gated private ones. Same with colleges.
Socialist my ass...

(12,958 posts)The tour guide was explaining one of the high rises was a single apartment per floor, costing millions per residence. I asked her what the difference was between the people living in the rich areas and those in the slums. She said one word: College
I asked her how hard is it for a poor person to go to college in Brazil. She stated it is almost impossible because it is so expensive.
College is the difference between living in a slum or living in a high rise/nice neighborhood.
College should be a RIGHT everywhere.

(269,157 posts)Check out today's Panama Papers release - lots of rich Latin Americans are hiding money that used to be part of taxes to improve healthcare, education and infrastructure.
The corrupt thieves are everywhere - and they are only exposed when they don't defer to the interests of the global rich and their political tools - and of course the bosses at the multi-lateral agencies.

Brazils political tumult has descended into farce after a little-known and newly appointed lower house speaker proclaimed the annulment of last months impeachment vote against Dilma Rousseff.
The surprise move which was immediately challenged by senior figures in the senate provided an absurd twist in the countrys ongoing political drama that would stretch the credibility of a House of Cards plot.
Just days before the senate was expected to adopt the motion and suspend the president, Waldir Maranhão who took over as acting speaker last week appeared to have thrown Rousseff a lifeline by saying the vote needed to be rerun due to procedural flaws.
The Workers party leader was crushed in a boisterous and sometimes bizarre lower house impeachment vote on 17 April when more than two-thirds of deputies agreed that she should be removed from office for whitewashing government accounts with money borrowed from state banks ahead of her 2014 re-election campaign.
---------------------------
The word is bizzare - it was a parliamentary coup that has nothing to do with the Constitution.

(4,213 posts)1. The group in power are more-or-less liberals. It should be our objective to ensure that liberal governments are put in power in every nation on the face of the Earth. Therefore, the potential downfall of one is bad.
2. The particular party in question is/was corrupt as fuck. Unfortunately, it was more-or-less the status quo for Brazil across the board. Our position should be to encourage Brazil to put forward very strong anti-corruption laws. It could be used as an opportunity to clean things up, while hopefully allowing them to save face and remain in power. I know the far right--especially the religious right--are excited about all of this and are hoping to make gains.

Should you care? Maybe.
Is it good? Probably not.
Bad? Very likely, but only marginally worse than if she actually had been impeached.
The Olympics? Bad news for Brazil.
What do the people want? Almost 90% of the Brazilian public wants her gone.
