Lynch said during a press conference the controversial “bathroom” law targeted transgender people who sought “to engage in the most private of functions in a place of safety and security, a right taken for granted by most of us.”

She also warned that the federal government could curtail federal funding for North Carolina if the state continued to enforce the law.

She noted that the Justice Department had sent a letter to North Carolina governor Pat McCrory, warning that the law violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. But “instead of replying, North Carolina and its governor chose to respond by suing, thus we are filing civil rights lawsuit against North Carolina,” Lynch said.

“What we must never do is turn on our neighbors, our family members, and our fellow Americans for something they cannot control and deny what makes them human. This is why none of us can stand by when a state enters the business of legislation identity and insists a person pretend to be something or someone they are not.”

That conservatives and Republicans mostly still believe that sexuality and identity is a choice.

They think trans people are perverted men that just disguise themselves to prey on women in bathrooms.

But if you were to ask them about trans men (born female but is male) oh well they don't even talk about that.

Rape culture has a part in their thinking as well. "Men can't help themselves so let's build the world around them!"

I'm so ashamed in my state.

It would be the end of his political career. Not that I foresee him having much of one left anyway. Maybe he'll ooze his way on back to Duke Power. He's certainly done well by them.

That's one of the things that occasionally scares me about November. Could Trump actually put lipstick on the GOP civil rights pig? Probably not. But he's definitely been the most prominent GOP supporter of Transgender individuals, and the most prominent to condemn North Carolina's laws. See: invitation to use bathroom of choice on Trump properties.

I hate to say it, but Trump is actually on the right side here.

But I say cut off all federal aid starting now. No highway funding. No education funding. No DoD pork barrel spending. Freeze military funding at this year's level and plan to reduce. No federal emergency aid if needed. Nothing more. Zip. Starting now. Anything less and these bigots will declare victory.

And similar lawsuits need to be filed and similar actions taken in all the states that are attempting to refight the civil war.

Yeah, I know. Not possible and definitely over the top. But lawsuits that meander through the system and raging jabs in the press are pointless.

The only thing bigots understand is pain. Make them feel it, make them suffer, make them regret it, and then it ends. As a bonus, it motivates all the non-bigots in the state to action against the bigots, helping push them out of elected office.

of her speech driving home from school. As a North Carolinian, it has been horrible to have this clown as our governor. He whines about a three day dead line to overturn his/our legislatures 12 hour legislation….dirty words about him/them come to mind….The AG was fantastic.! Her statement served my state a good wake up call. As parent of students needing federal aid for college I hope that my kids get funding for college this fall. I suspect Fed actions will take awhile working their way through the legal process before we have too much to worry about, but the threat is out there, and as pig-headed and stupid as our governor and legislators are….we will continue to suffer here in NC….

Let the states decide. Republicans in some states are cutting school lunches. You can't have the states on the one hand saying we'll discriminate against anyone we want to, for any reason, and then have them take federal funding with the other.

(Yes, I already admitted to hyperbole. And, no I don't want people to die. I'm as bleeding heart as they come. But actions have consequences, and this level of bigotry has no place in a civil society.)

Tue May 10, 2016, 07:48 AM

I'd say cutting off pork to the 10 gerrymandered Republican districts would be the best way to start, and it's not hard to find.

I get where you're coming from but those of us here are protesting as much as we can. And our state boasts a really strong federally funded research enterprise, including at Duke and UNC Medical Centers (plus all of the tech/ag/solar/space research at NC State and other programs.)

In addition to killing more people (than our lovely GOP General Assembly already has by cutting benefits, refusing to expand Medicaid, now trying to privatize Medicaid, etc.) cutting federal funding would stop a lot of globally vital medical research in its tracks on which universities, medical centers, and people all over the world depend. All of the clin trials for cancer and other diseases at Duke and Carolina would just stop. Labs couldn't be maintained and critical models (including the poor lab animals) would have to be destroyed.

Faculty would be laid off. Classes would stop. Medical school training would stop. Medical services would stop. Research assistantships would end and students from around the world would have to leave for lack of funding. A generation of future physicians and researchers in training would face serious setbacks and might leave the field for good.

This just scratches the surface. Just cut the transportation pork handouts and business incentives to the Republican districts.
