Hello!
The wooded hills of southwestern Pennsylvania, the eastern half of Ohio and northern and central West Virginia will soon come alive with the sounds of lustful, dissonant, music, the mating call of tens of millions of big, brawny, boy bugs.
When the soil temperature reaches 64 degrees eight inches below the surface, the mature nymphs crawl out of their deep holes, usually at night or in the morning, and climb up tree trunks or whatever structure is handy, where they pop out of their copper-colored nymphal skins or exoskeletons to molt and emerge as winged adults. The exoskeletons are left behind, harden and are often seen clinging to trees, fences, telephone poles and houses.

(1,558 posts)1. We refer to them....
...as heat bugs.
It's always warm out when they chirp.

I would single-mouthedly ward off the infestation.

They've got kind of a nutty flavor. Just take off as much of the chitin as you can so it doesn't get stuck in your teeth. That's unpleasant.
I remember cicada waves. I loved the singing, hated trying to walk through them during the day when they were on the move.
I think I've seen maybe one grasshopper here in NM in 20+ years, and that was before the drought.

So I'm not sure what they taste like in a more pure preparation.
I'm always amazed at the volume even of individual cicadas, so when you get a whole cloud of them it's amazing.
