Why is it okay for whites to riot but not okay when Mexicans do it? — OC Weekly’s Gustavo Arellano

Bethania Palma Markus
.... Gustavo Arellano, OC Weekly editor-in-chief, wrote in an op-ed on Friday, “Worldwide, conservatives and namby-pamby liberals are slamming protestors for waving Mexican flags, for beating up people, for destroying cop cars, and for raising general DESMADRE.” ....

“OC Mexican riots at least have more of a legitimate reason—anger against a political apparatus that despises them—than gabacho riots, which usually involve beer or drugs or some other bro excuse for fucking shit up,” Arellano writes. ....

“One of my many jobs at this infernal rag is historian, so I know nearly all the official, unofficial, hidden, and lost histories of Orange County, “Arellano notes. “And despite its image as straight-laced, OC has always loved its riots and mass rallies—that is, if gabachos are the major participants. Oh, they get hammered when they’re actually happening, but as the years go on, past riots take on a Instagram filter of nostalgia.”

And then there’s the 30,000-person Ku Klux Klan rally and cross burning near a Mexican citrus camp in Anaheim in 1924.

He then lists incidents of mass chaos or violence involving non-whites, including a 1969 clash between the Black Panthers and Santa Ana police and the 30,000-strong amnesty rallies in Santa Ana in 2006.

“At every single one of these riots and rallies, Mexicans were reviled, slammed, and demonized in the aftermath, and all these events have either been swept under the rug or been slurred over time,” Arellano writes. “It’s as if every time Mexicans protest, Orange County’s guilty conscience wakes up and remembers how terrible it has treated them over the decades—but then their massa side gets mad that the wabs are daring to get uppity, and thus must crush and destroy. It’s as if Mexican(s) in la naranja are supposed to take the sliming of their heritage and their relatives quietly, in a county that made Mexican-bashing into a political art.”

Gustavo Arellano is the publisher and editor of Orange County's alternative weekly OC Weekly, and the author of the column ¡Ask a Mexican!, which is syndicated nationally.[1][2][3] Arellano has won numerous awards for the column, including the 2006 and 2008 Best Non-Political Column in a large-circulation weekly from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, the 2007 Presidents Award from the Los Angeles Press Club and an Impacto Award from the National Hispanic Media Coalition, and a 2008 Latino Spirit award from the California Latino Legislative Caucus.[citation needed]

The columns were collected in book form in 2008 as ¡Ask a Mexican! (Scribners, ISBN 978-1416540038). Arellano has published two further books: Orange County: A Personal History (Scribners, 2008, ISBN 978-1416540045), and Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America (Scribners, 2012, ISBN 978-1439148617)

He is a third cousin, once removed, of actress Jessica Alba.

The 1924 KKK cross burning is accepted in main stream (or even white main stream) culture today? Because that is what it sounds like he is implying by asking "Why is OK for whites to riot...", and then bringing up the example from the 1924 KKK.

Hint: Its not OK for any race to riot. This guy needs to climb down the stairs of his ivory tower and walk around the county he is reporting on. It is a conservative county, but it is incredibly diverse. In my 12 years of living there, which included college years of bar hopping every weekend in numerous areas including costa mesa (the city where the recent riot happened), I witnessed 1 racist rant.

As for violence, it's more the rule in human (animal/biological) nature with individuals like GANDHI being the exception. "Ivory tower" connotes academia, which is not the top feature of his bio. I would say that "1 racist rant" is anecdotal. Are you suggesting that "a conservative county, but it is incredibly diverse" means an absence of racism? The DRUMPF supporters who have had racial confrontations might be visitors to the rallies.

Taking your point specifically about the county and your first hand experience, this doesn't disprove DRUMPF's role and constituents.

ON EDIT: *******Let's backtrack:

* The only reason O.C. is cited is because that's where the DRUMPF event was in California.

* DRUMPF-bots have been punching, dragging, and kicking people all over the place. He has incited violence. His verbal attacks have been *visceral*.

I know my story is just anecdotal, therefore doesn't prove anything outside of my experience. I am mainly trying to defend OC as a whole, since I don't think it is an evil place that is full of racists. The population demographics in some cities range from majority white, majority latino, majority asian, and people get along.

It seems like him going back to 1924 to bring up a KKK rally is disingenuous. Why not talk about the recent attempted KKK rally in Anaheim around a month ago? A small group of KKK members showed up, and they were physically beat up by the local residents. No white people rioted on that day. The argument about free speech aside, I think its pretty obvious Anaheim/OC isn't a KKK hot bed where 30,000 people show up to burn a cross these days, and just wanted to stand up for the place I used to call home

you can certainly see how Latinos have felt the personal sting from DRUMPF's vicious attacks. ARELLANO is mainly talking double-standard, citing "bro" (white) violence like after sports victories or losses.

When a bunch of white fratheads set some police cars on fire, the media describes it as "youthful exuberance" and lets it slide.

But, oh, when those brown people riot over civil rights instead of a football game, the same media assholes are calling for airstrikes.

Oh, also, there's the whole propaganda against Latinos daring to use protest to show pride in their heritage. They're expected to raise the American flag and look like a bunch of Southern white trash howling "MURICA! FUCK YEAH!" One Mexican flag, because, you know, some of them are from Mexico and have fond memories of the place, and all of the sudden the Drumpfucks are howling "Reconquista".

No matter what you do, you can't win if you're a protester.
