Hastert sentenced to 15 months in prison! -- EDITED

Last edited Wed Apr 27, 2016, 01:15 PM - Edit history (2)

No link yet, I'm hearing this on television.

Apparently WGN got it wrong. Hastert got 15 months in prison. The judge talked a long time and mentioned possible sentences. The news reporters talked too soon! Also a $250,000 fine.

One of his accusers is the brother of a former Republican state representative, one Scott Cross.

I'll post a link when it becomes available. Here's a link. I'll edit once there is more information.

Dennis Hastert Sentenced to 15 Months in Prison in Hush-Money Case

Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert was sentenced Wednesday to 15 months in prison for illegal cash withdrawals he made for payoffs to cover up sex-abuse allegations after the judge called him a "serial child molester."

Hastert, 74, is accused of molesting four boys between the ages of 14 and 17 when he was a coach at Yorkville High School decades ago, though he was not charged with any sexual crimes because of the statute of limitations.

The ex-politician, who arrived in a wheelchair, apologized "to the boys I mistreated when I was their coach" but did not use word abuse.

"What I did was wrong and I regret it," Hastert testified. "They looked up to me and I took advantage of them."

Can you name a time when we had such a thing? There has never been anything resembling equal justice in this country. Not when human beings were called "property;" not when human beings were considered 3/5 human; not when "separate but equal" was the law of the land; and not today.

<snip>
Calling Dennis Hastert a "serial child molester," a judge sentenced the former House speaker to 15 months in prison for paying $1.7 million in hush money to cover up sexual abuse from his days as a teacher and wrestling coach.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Durkin said his sentence would have been longer if not for Hastert's age and health. "This is not meant to be a death sentence," he said. Hastert is 74.

The sentence was handed down after Hastert admitted publicly for the first time that he sexually abused athletes while he was a wrestling coach at Yorkville High School. After Hastert admitted he had "mistreated" some athletes, the judge asked him if he sexually abused them.

Yes, Hastert answered.

It looks like the judge exceeded the recommended sentencing here. Maybe the other GOP criminals who came to bat for Hastert did more harm than good?

Does seem to imply that his testimony helped sway the judge. Also, Hastert's position as a Speaker of the House did him no favors in the judges eyes.

Good, the man deserves to spend some time behind bars for what he did. Even if it's not for the worst of his actions against the children he molested, it is a form of justice for his victims.

There's also the fact that his reputation (even among Republicans here in Illinois) is ruined due to the vile crimes he committed. Apparently, there are nine boys that are known about. Who knows if there are more? He couldn't even remember what he did to Scott Cross.

The purpose of the law he violated is to stop tax cheats and money laundering. He did it solely to escape embarrassment.

Pretty sure the law is written to simply catch anyone who is trying to avoid the attention of law enforcement. But just as it is not illegal for me to lie to a law officer about something irrelevant, I would think the fact that this was done for irrelevant purposes would have merited a not guilty verdict.

Especially in light of the fact that they never caught him. He turned himself in before they even knew a crime had been committed!

A lot of people seem to think he was convicted of molesting children. I have even seen it erroneously reported that way several times. But he was not. As you quoted in the OP.
