Apple’s iPhone-iPad-Mac Fiasco in 4 Interactive Charts

Apple’s iPhone-iPad-Mac Fiasco in 4 Interactive Charts
by Wolf Richter • April 26, 2016

Apple shares are currently getting crushed. At $95.66, they’re down 8.3% after the bell. The company reported second quarter earnings that, as it has been termed, “missed across the board.”

Revenue dropped 13% to $55.5 billion. Net income plunged 22% to $10.52 billion. Earnings per share plunged 18% from $2.33 per share a year ago to $1.90 per share.

Oh, and iPhone sales fell for the first time ever. Not “fell.” But “plunged.” In dollar terms, they plunged 18.4% from a year ago. In unit terms, they plunged 16%.

Here are four interactive charts depicting the revenue and unit-sales fiasco in the different segments. Hover over them to get the specific data (Data curated by FindTheCompany): http://wolfstreet.com/2016/04/26/heres-apples-iphone-ipad-mac-fiasco-in-4-interactive-charts/

1. I don't understand the "why" from the charts. I do see the trends however

I've bought 3 iPhones (3G, 4S, & 6S). I generally get one every two to three years. If everyone buys a 6, for example, and it lasts them for two years and Apple puts out a phone every year, it would make sense that every other year there might be a slump.

I also have an iPad that should last at least three years, thus I won't be buying the next three models that come out.

Apple touted the iPhone 6 as the greatest thing since sliced bread. Ok, everyone buys a 6 and it lasts two years. They have to expect that their off year sales will be down.

On a side note, I can't help but chuckle over "dismal" earnings of $55 billion.

5. I am about to toss out my iPad due to the version updates that have turned it into a brick

The Microsoft Surface is looking better & better, since Apple's latest version updates have made my iPad almost unusable due to the way it eats up so much Ram that it constantly freezes up. It's like Apple is forcing obsolescence, by not allowing backward compatability for older devices.

6. Yep. Against my better judgement I bought an iPad, which is 2 yrs old and obsolete.

It was working great until it was updated to version 8. Now at 9.3.1 and I am done.

The smartphone market is reaching saturation, almost everybody who wants one has one. People aren't upgrading their phones as much, if your current smartphone works great why buy a new one just for a few incremental changes. Plus now that the carriers are not subsidizing them anymore people are " WTF, how much for a new phone???!!!

Last year in the first quarter with the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, they sold over 60 MILLION phones.
This year's first quarter they sold over 50 MILLION phones, with essentially they same lineup; its a big drop but not really unexpected.

iPad sales are dropping for the same reason, almost everyone who wants one has one, the newer models aren't that different.(better)

EVERYONE is selling less computers, because...... people are using the smartphones or tablets....

They have had an amazing run and its definitely slowing down. But I wouldn't worry too much a company that has like 200 BILLION in cash on hand. (Most of it overseas but thats another issue)
