Unfortunately, the video does not give any specifics about where or when it took place, but it certainly looks legitimate.

(16,423 posts)Honestly.
In Germany, you get a national ID at the age of 18 and it costs about 20. It contains name, photo, address, date of birth, height and eye-color. And it's valid for any and all government-related purposes, from travel to voting.
All this grand drama about voter IDs and whether or not and what's a valid one andsoforth SIMPLY DOESN'T EXIST IN GERMANY.
Because the system already provides you with a universally accepted form of ID.

(34,136 posts)My high school civics teacher is probably rolling over in his grave these days. During the segment on Americanism vs. Communism one of his major points about how the American system was better was that citizens were not required to have an ID to do everyday things, like walk down the street or to exercise their right to vote. Sure you had to have a license to drive, or hunt - but not to own a gun (this was in 1966 in Florida where we still don't have to have a license to own a gun, just one to carry concealed).
Since the Republicans have made such a big deal out of voter ID and now proof of sex to use the restrooms, I'm ready for a national ID. It could replace Social Security cards. Every single person would be automatically issued a photo ID, along with automatic registration to vote for every eligible citizen. Boom - problem solved.
The national ID card could have a chip that would be updated with added privileges - when you pass your driver's test, that info is added to the card. If a draft is needed, no paperwork to find every person who is needed to enlist, just use the national database. Hunting, gun, professional licenses can be programmed in. With today's technology, law enforcement wouldn't even have to ask for your card - their scanners could read it from a distance!
Yep, my civics teacher is rolling in his grave!

(16,423 posts)Wanna bet that this is a counter-argument that would come up?
If the government knows who you are and where you live, that's just the pretext to taking your guns.
(Also: The microchip in your government-issued ID allows them to track every move and/or is a mind-control device.)
But seriously, voter-registration is another important thing: You automatically get registered in your town with name, address and everything.
If you move to a new town, you have to go to the city-hall: THEY put you in the local voter-database and THEY contact your old town to tell them to delete you immediately from THEIR local voter-database. No yearly purging of voter-rolls necessary: It all happens on a continuous basis and in real-time.

as for the national id thing in conservatives...i dated a wacko conservative woman for a bit...perhaps the more flat our gorgeous woman i ever dated...but i digress.....
anyway the big thing among looney rights christians was that during the end time the national id was foretold as the mark of the devil in the book of revelations

This should register you to vote automatically on your 18th birthday.

The scene in the OP boils down to a very short conversation.
"Boy or Girl? Can you prove it?" Done.
Did somebody ask the cops to remove that "man"? The article doesn't mention what happened before the video started.

(1,313 posts)Really? You should not need an ID to do everyday activities; like use the restroom or walk down the street. As far as voting, signature works fine and has worked fine forever. Fraud in that context in non-existent.
DetlefK
(16,423 posts)You know, other than sorting people by gender.
Voting in the US has worked fine?????? HAHAHAHA!
And nobody was disenfranchised ever(!) because some politician decided shortly before an election which kinds of ID would be valid and which wouldn't.
"Surprise, students! You can't vote here because your dorm isn't actually your valid home-address! You have to vote at your parents!"
"And old people cannot vote despite having lived in the US for 70 years!"
FighttheFuture
(1,313 posts)I am saying registered at your polling place, with your signature on file as worked very well vs. the new push (in red states, mostly) for various ID's, some accepted (NRA gun card), many not (Student ID). As for registering, that can be tied into when you obtain a state ID, such as Drivers license, or State ID (if you do not drive). Same day, bring in some utility bills, library card, etc. to show proof of residence. Keep it flexible... the point it to allow people to vote, not try to restrict it. Fraud at that level is non-existant. The problems with voting are much more insidious.
It's not hard, and national ID's that you always should carry is excessive.

(16,423 posts)Why was there police in the first place? Who called them? What was the complaint?
Did some woman complain that there's a "man" in the women's restroom and won't leave?
I know how the police could have resolved this without demanding ID:
"Sir, we've had a complaint, I need you to leave."
"But I'm really a lady!"
"Pinky-swear?"
"Absolutely!"
"Ma'am, you've heard her: She's a lady."

(51,308 posts)So I walk into a restroom and a woman thinks I look like a guy, so she runs out and tries to find a cop? Or calls 911? Makes no sense.
The cops would be laughing themselves silly, and I'd be long gone by the time they got there since it would hardly be regarded as a priority call.
There was another OP with a video similar to this one, but it turned out NOT to be what it said it was. I'm skeptical until I see where and when this happened.

(5,997 posts)Naturally, I'm taking it to an absurd extreme, but "Transgender Bathroom Panic" seems to be the next logical step, since the Rubicon has been crossed.
Here's a good piece from MOJO about how this is "Model Legislation" is spawned of a hate group...

Proud Liberal Dem
(24,414 posts)is that the people pushing these bills don't understand the concept of "Transgender" or what it means for somebody to be Transgender or the whole range of the spectrum when it applies to gender. Transgender women don't identify nor think of themselves as "men in a dress" (thinking of them as such would be offensive to them in the first place). They identify as women (and should be considered as such). They are taking themselves into the women's restrooms to do the exact same thing as other women: use the toilets. I also think that Republicans/right-wingers have some really bizarre and perverted notions about what happens in most bathrooms. Even though I'm sure they visit public restrooms all of the time, they sure do seem to think that bathrooms are wild "swingers clubs" where people are regularly meeting for sexual activity. They must think that women's restrooms must be extra-special places to be because they think that a lot of cis(male-identified)-males want to be in bathrooms with women so bad that they will dress up in drag just to gain admittance. I'm sorry but they are f*****g delusional/crazy/insane if they actually believe that most straight cis-gender males- whom feel intense pressure to prove their manhood every single day of their lives- will dress up in drag just to be able to gain admittance to the women's restrooms.

(86,647 posts)if it doesn't fit their imagined "reality" then it's not a gawd-approved whatever and has to be eradicated so they can be happy and blissful because nobody/nothing has any right to anything - including to exist - without approval of their idea of gawd.

(24,414 posts)To them, knowledge of anything (other than maybe the Bible and the "correct" fundagelical interpretation thereof) is dangerous and, by extension, EVIL! Also, to them, tolerance of persons different to themselves, is like the "Eighth Deadly Sin"- and something to be avoided at all costs, so they wouldn't be caught dead trying to seek peace and better understanding.

(86,647 posts)believable ways to discriminate (thanks to civil rights laws and all that) so they are really reaching to come up with new ways to express their hatred. It's why they keep fighting for theocracy because that would allow them to once again hide behind gawd with no other explanation or reasonable excuse. Gawd is imaginary so they can make stuff up and blame it all on their imaginary friend and protector.
Proud Liberal Dem
(24,414 posts)They are flailing around at this point with these bathroom bills and "religious liberty" bills. The good news is that these bills will probably ultimately fail in the courts, which pretty much means that the only thing left to do after these get shot down is simply to prevent the enactment of new civil rights laws and protections for LGBTs (which is likely unsustainable in the long-term because eventually there will be federal protections). The bad news is that it won't stop wingnuts in charge of legislatures everywhere from trying to introduce, pass, and enforce them- until these laws get challenged and wind their way slowly through the court system.
