I apologize.. I am over-tired, exhausted actually, and it has been pointed out that this is a SATIRE SITE.. I saw the ABC logo, and didn't notice the ".co" on the end of the URL... but I'm going to leave this here for "wishful thinking", and to show that I can admit a mistake when I make one... Peace! The United States Revokes Scientology’s Tax-Exempt Status

By abcnews - March 13, 2016

The Church of Scientology loses tax exempt status
In a unanimous decision by the Supreme Court today, the eight justices ruled in favor of revoking the Church of Scientology’s tax-exempt status in the United States. Under the ruling, Scientology will still be able to operate as a business but no longer as a non-profit religious organization.

The case was brought forward by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division after concluding a two-year-long investigation into the inner workings of Scientology. The investigation, along with an extensive audit, found the group to be a “criminal operation with a sole purpose of making money”. The eight justices agreed with the IRS and its findings that Scientology was neither a religion or fell under the guidelines of a non-profit charitable organization.

CI Special Agent, Tom Downey, worked closely with IRS Chief Counsel Criminal Tax Attorneys during the course of the investigation.

“If private schools had similar prices to the courses in Scientology, students would receive the absolute highest level of education by the top educators in the country,” Downey said. “But in reality, based on the ridiculously high cost of Scientology, there is no school out there that even exists. The best schools in this country charge a fraction of the exorbitant amounts of money that Scientology charges its members.”

{snip}

Beginning April 6th, 2016, The Church of Scientology will no longer receive tax exemption in the United States. Attorneys for Scientology have 30 days to appeal the case, although it is not yet clear whether they will or not.

I see that the article is over a month old, but this is the first time that I have seen anything about it. Apologies if this has already been posted before and discussed but, as stated, it is news to me, and may be to some others as well.

It is a very interesting, and informative, article that is well worth the time to read. It even covers a covert operation by Scientology members, Operation Snow White, who infiltrated the I.R.S. and copied a huge amount of documents...

Eleven high-ranking Scientologists, including Hubbard’s wife Mary Sue Hubbard, were sentenced to time in prison for acts surrounding this operation. L. Ron Hubbard himself was named as an unindicted co-conspirator as investigators could not link him to the crimes.

people with PHD's and Law degrees some making very good money @ other jobs living weekly rental hotel rooms you know the type where a bathroom is shared by an entire floor-usually located above bars at least in Mpls I could name them if you're familiar with the area and why because nearly every dime they were making went to Scientology for classes, I answered phones half the calls were from collection agencies looking for other folks who worked for Scientology

I don't know about you but what do you call a 'religion' that does this to people?

Scientology offers courses that have a certain cost. There's literature published by Scientology organizations that lists the costs for individual courses. Some introductory courses cost $50; other things including Scientology counseling can cost a lot more.

Personally, I don't imagine that I would take on debt for such courses. I don't condemn those that do.

but I'm happy the organization is no longer tax-exempt. If their program is science-based and if people find it helpful, that's ok. Pretending to be a church was never a good idea, imho.

I agree with that fully. In my opinion, the Church of Scientology meets the guidelines established by the IRS for churches. I understand that individuals might not agree with the Scientology spiritual or organizational practices. The IRS has definite guidelines.

These are the guidelines:

https://www.irs.gov/Charities-&-Non-Profits/Churches-&-Religious-Organizations/Churches--Defined

"Churches" Defined

The term church is found, but not specifically defined, in the Internal Revenue Code. With the exception of the special rules for church audits, the use of the term church also includes conventions and associations of churches as well as integrated auxiliaries of a church.

Certain characteristics are generally attributed to churches. These attributes of a church have been developed by the IRS and by court decisions. They include:

Distinct legal existence
Recognized creed and form of worship
Definite and distinct ecclesiastical government
Formal code of doctrine and discipline
Distinct religious history
Membership not associated with any other church or denomination
Organization of ordained ministers
Ordained ministers selected after completing prescribed courses of study
Literature of its own
Established places of worship
Regular congregations
Regular religious services
Sunday schools for the religious instruction of the young
Schools for the preparation of its members

The IRS generally uses a combination of these characteristics, together with other facts and circumstances, to determine whether an organization is considered a church for federal tax purposes.

It was also created by a failed Sci-Fi writer (hack) and con artist who wanted to bilk people out of as much money as possible. They prey on society's most vulnerable. Despite that, what makes a religion a religion? Scientology has all of those things. They were just created to perpetuate the scam.

Did you know that Scientology has its own slave ship? Creepy af.
