Latino vote, a sleeping giant, has been awakened

It's payback time. For years, the Republican Party has dreamed that it could win over Latino voters. Well, the dream is over in an election year in which most Latino voters will shun the Republican Party. And there isn't a thing that Ted Cruz or Donald Trump can do to awaken from what they and their party have created: an electoral nightmare.

This Republican reckoning has been in the works for a long time. When the party turned against the Civil Rights Act in the '60s, concocting its southern strategy to win disaffected white Democrats, it signed a deal with the devil known as racism. Each passing election brought the party of Lincoln closer and closer to official bigotry.

Donald Trump is the eternal gift to the Democrats this year, I don't think everyone truly sees the enormity of the fear and loathing he has engendered in minority communities, particularly Latinos.

becoming U.S. citizens to vote against Trump. Fortunately, it appears most blame the GOP for him.

I'm afraid this Houston Chronicle author's view of GOP racial history is extremely overly kind. The GOP hasn't been anything Lincoln would join for going on 150 years. It has had many shots at becoming the party of conservative Latinos, never liberal, but instead might as well have been trying to drive them into a unified force against the GOP.

I hope this author is at least right when he says they're now awakened. We've not been hearing nearly enough about what's going on with such a potentially huge power block in America, or not. Even this late most articles are all speculation. Everyone's wondering -- will they finally rock the vote? According to Pew, of almost 57 million Latinos, 27 million are eligible to vote.

Bernie's friend managed to wangle an invite for him to the Pontifical Academy's conference, which receives a portion of is funding from the Vatican. This was odd because the conference was set up to celebrate the 25th anniversary of John Paul's encyclical on why capitalism was better than communism. But Bernie was determined to go anyway, hoping for some good publicity right before the NY primary.

Bernie's friend was staying in the same guest house where the Pope lives. He arranged for Bernie to say there, too. They waylaid the Pope in the hall at 6 am in the morning, as he was heading out on his way to Greece.

The Pope says that it was a polite handshake, nothing more; and that anyone who thinks it was anything political should see a psychiatrist.

The Hispanics in New York wasn't fooled by this publicity stunt. Neither will Hispanics in California. They understand that this was just the left wing version of the Kim Davis "audience" with the Pope.

Bernie didn't care about celebrating a 25 year old encyclical on the virtues of capitalism -- which was the purpose of the conference he attended. This was blatant pandering to the Catholic vote, and he just looked ridiculous.

He did wangle an invitation. He did an end-run around the woman who is the President of the Pontifical Academy, in what she termed an act of “monumental discourtesy,” and secured an invite from a Bishop board member instead.

And the Pope himself said the 6 a.m. encounter was a “handshake and nothing more.”

http://www.cruxnow.com/church/2016/04/16/pope-francis-calls-sanders-greeting-only-common-courtesy/

On the Vermont senator, Francis said he greeted Sanders on Saturday morning as he was leaving the Santa Marta, the hotel within Vatican grounds where the pope lives.

Sanders was staying at the same residence, because that’s where all participants in the Vatican conference he attended on Friday were spending the night. The only exceptions were Presidents Evo Morales of Bolivia and Rafael Correa of Ecuador, who stayed at their country’s embassy in Rome.

“This morning as I was leaving, Senator Sanders was there,” Francis said. “He knew I was coming out at that time, and he had the kindness to greet me.”

“When I came down, he introduced himself, I greeted him with a handshake, and nothing more,” the pope added. “It’s common courtesy, this is called common courtesy.

If someone thinks that greeting someone is getting involved in politics,” he said, “I recommend that they find a psychiatrist.

http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2016-04-08/sanders-accused-of-discourtesy-in-seeking-vatican-invitation

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’ plan to attend a Vatican-sponsored conference put him in the middle of a diplomatic row as a senior Vatican official accused the senator of showing “monumental discourtesy” in angling for an invitation that puts a political cast on the gathering.

Sanders “made the first move two or three days ago,” Archer said. She did not know whom he or his representatives contacted. “His use of it is clearly a pretext,” she said. “There are just 20 academics and there will be nothing of policy relevance.”

However Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, the chancellor of the Academy, speaking on the phone from New York, said he extended the invitation to Sanders, though he repeatedly declined to say who initiated the contact.

Archer story is old, it was Bishop Sorono on the invitation from the Social Sciences Academy who clarified. Done, over. The demeaning wording and tone of your comment was what I remarked on.

And a "polite handshake" is what I said, versus the Pope's words "a handshake, nothing more." and "Common courtesy."

I said waylaid, and other reports said stalked and ambushed. If you prefer those other terms, fine.

Translated Lyrics

He’s the man with a vision
to better this country.
Running for president
but the rich don’t want him.
Bernie Sanders is his name.
Now you're going to feel his burn.

New York is the state where he was born.
Brooklyn where he grew up.
As kid he started noticing
the rich getting richer
and the poor working longer hours.
Still many don't make enough to survive.

He's the son of Immigrants
who came in search of better lives.
Working to succeed
like we all do every day.
We come here with the same dream:
Provide our families a better chance at life.

The rich and the media don't like him
and they’re scared that he can win.
He wants college to be free
so our children can progress.
He believes health care is for all.
Not a business, but a human right.

Years ago, in Chicago, he was arrested
for protesting against segregation.
He doesn’t care about the color of your skin
to him we are all children of God.
Many call him Robin Hood
others call him The Bern.

Fighting for the rights of the people
even law enforcement could not stop him.
He'll keep battling until he becomes
president of this nation.
Bernie Sanders is his name.
This is his corrido The Bern!

20. 33% of Hispanicss say the economy is the #1 issue.
Sat Apr 23, 2016, 04:13 PM
Apr 2016

Which one of the following issues will be the most important in deciding your vote for President in November 2016?

Jobs and the economy 33%
Immigration 17%
Education 16%
Healthcare 11%
Terrorism 9%
Foreign policy 4%
Global climate change 3%
Same sex marriage 1%
Other 3%
No opinion 2%

This was back in February. Same sex marriage is basically not an issue. No mention of abortion. I've read that Latinos are far more aware and accepting of the reality of global warming than the average American, but basically "it's the economy stupid," then a cluster of education, immigration, and healthcare.

Most Hispanics say the country is on the wrong track, and among Democrats Hispanics are more negative than the public overall - 46 percent.

Hispanics lean heavily toward supporting Democrats over Republicans - 51 percent to 14 for the GOP, but 32% say they are unsure whom to support. (14+32=46%!)

Yet, 74 percent of Hispanic voters say Trump's views on immigration are offensive, but only 29 percent of those who have heard about them say they represent the Republican Party overall. (There could be an unpleasant surprise in here. At least half of all Hispanics are conservative by nature, even if currently pushed away by the GOP.)

Clinton leads by 2 to 1 among Hispanic Democrats, but Sanders performs better with younger voters, 57 - 28.

82 percent of Hispanic voters want the next president to support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, and 43 percent would not vote for a candidate who opposes such a policy.
