(1,352 posts)They are very very different things.
(Unless your arnica cream doesn't actually have any arnica in it. In which case it IS homeopathic and your MD should be ashamed of themself.)

(72,300 posts)Silly me
True story: A friend was hit by a car. He has a fractured fibula. I bought the Arnica for him to use until he saw a doctor. Imagine my surprise when he came home (after getting an xray) with written directions from the doc about using arnica cream and pills

(1,352 posts)I have chronic pain issues and a wicked inability to take NSAIDS, so often arnica is my only option.

(35,773 posts)The most therapeutic part of that treatment is the act of rubbing it in. You either have an MD who is ok with recommending placebo, or one who doesn't understand how science works.
It's your choice whether or not to keep going to such an individual.

(755 posts)Already justifiably despised for price gouging, and for funding regular, systematic, disingenuous attacks on competing non-toxic holistic health practices like acupuncture and homeopathy, Big Pharma, Inc. is now being fingered for the profoundly debilitating "side effects' of its synthetic-chemical pharmaceutical concoctions.
DANGER: Pharmaceuticals can engender DEMENTIA - April 21, 2016, Salon
How Big Pharma is harming our senior citizens
"...people are taking more drugs than ever before and not always aware of their side effects and interactions. This polypharmacy can produce everything from falls and accidents to behavior that is quickly termed dementia in the elderly, even when it is clearly from drug effects...."

(755 posts)Especially when viewed in context of how toxic synthetic drug makers are operating unfairly by funding and sustaining disingenuous campaigns against non-toxic competition.

(755 posts)...and I'm establishing the context of their sustained, disingenuous & underhanded campaign against non-toxic holistic health competition.
You are welcome.

(35,773 posts)Pointing out side effects of treatments that have actual function does not change that. In fact, it only serves to show your true purpose, as you only pay attention to one side of the scientific ledger, and then only in regard to legitimate treatments.
Your love for Big Placebo is well established. It's not ok.

(755 posts)But it's very much OK with the hundreds of millions of people worldwide who suffer from Big Pharma's price gouging, it's corrupt corporate "science" intended to obfuscate and confuse, it's well-funded efforts to snuff out non-toxic completion, and the staggering, horrendous array of toxic and debilitating "side effects" that accompany their pharmaceutical products.
Your demand that people embrace IGNORANCE and overlook these ugly realities about Big Pharma and it's unholy competitive tactics against non-toxic health alternatives is NOT OK.
HuckleB
(35,773 posts)That's not ok. Your marketing propaganda doesn't matter. It's just a ludicrous attempt to justify the unjustifiable. It's not ok.
You're the one who demands that others remain ignorant. You're the one who only cares about some of the scientific evidence. You toss out all the evidence that shows your promotion of snake oil to be without warrant. That's not ok.

(755 posts)I have no where on this thread promoted homeopathy or any other form of non-toxic holistic health care. I've not even voiced an option about whether any of that stuff works or not.
The malignant, misinformed fantasy that I have somehow promoted it - as you seem OBSESSED WITH - is totally a result of your "Magical Thinking, Inc." and has no basis whatsoever in reality. I trust that you are not stooping so low as to intentionally lie about this matter, thus by the process of elimination it must be your "Magical Thinking."
I'm just a hard-working schlub trying to earn a decent wage slaving in the salt mines, so to speak, and the only things I know about homeopathy are that it's non-toxic and that Big Pharma regards it as competiton and is trying to squash it.
I could never muster the kind of raw arrogance that it would take to make a pronouncement about the validity of a non-toxic health approach that hundreds of millions of people use and find effective. Rather, I respect the right of other people to employ their own faculties of discernment based on their direct personal experience, and to employ free will to choose non-toxic approaches to health care over toxic synthetic approaches.
So - for the sake of decency - please stop repeating patently false information about me. It's not OK.
Just as the vast array of debilitating side effects from the overpriced products of Big Pharma, Inc. are not OK.

1. A few weeks ago, it was reported that a masters degree in homeopathic medicine at one of Spains top universities has been scrapped. Remarkably, the reason was lack of scientific basis. A university spokesman confirmed the course was being discontinued and gave three main reasons: Firstly, the universitys Faculty of Medicine recommended scrapping the masters because of the doubt that exists in the scientific community. Secondly, a lot of people within the university professors and students across different faculties had shown their opposition to the course. Thirdly, the postgraduate degree in homeopathic medicine is no longer approved by Spains Health Ministry.
2. On January 30, a group of experts from all walks of life met in Freiburg to discuss ways of informing the public responsibly and countering the plethora of misinformation that Germans are regularly exposed to on the subject of homeopathy. They founded the Information Network Homeopathy and decided on a range of actions.
3. Earlier that month, the Nobel laureate Venkatraman Ramakrishnan called homeopathy bogus. They (homeopaths) take arsenic compounds and dilute it to such an extent that just a molecule is left. It will not make any effect on you. Your tap water has more arsenic. No one in chemistry believes in homeopathy. It works because of placebo effect, he was quoted saying.

8. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences statement proposing the same scientific standards for homeopathic drug registration as for normal drugs Members of the Section of Medical Sciences of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (HAS) voted unanimously on 9 November 2015 for supporting the earlier proposal of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The Swedish statement requested that the homeopathic remedies should go through the same efficacy trials as normal drugs should.

It appears that time will take care of this nonsense, but why it's taking so long is still bizarre.
