Police in Chicago on Tuesday used a Taser on a women who is eight months pregnant over a dispute that occurred after she parked in a handicapped space.
Tiffany Rent pulled into the handicapped space at a Walgreens because she was trying to console her young daughter, Rents sister, Sharita Rent, told CBS Chicago.

She tried to explain to them what happened, as far as her little getting out of the car, and her trying to calm her down and console her, and the guy gave her a ticket for $200. She ripped the ticket up and threw it on the ground.
The sister also claimed that police hurled insults at Rent.
They all made little nasty, cruel comments one guy said, Does she have a hernia or something, and the other one told her to call Jesse Jackson. Another one said that she deserved it, Sharita Rent said. And Im thinking, how cruel is that? How could you be that cruel to a human being? A pregnant human being?

(61,695 posts)The physical harm and liability in tasing a pregnant woman could be significant. If she fell on her abdomen, she could have ruptured her uterus and bled to death. Or she could have gone into premature labor. And what does a taser do to the heart of a fetus?
These police officers should be fired for stupidity.

(9,527 posts)I doubt you can take the sister of the victim as an unbiased witness, but nobody is disputing that she committed an illegal act and then ripped up the ticket because she is apparently a rather petulant child.
Her being pregnant isn't a defense for stupid behavior. Is it possible that the woman did nothing wrong other than what is already admitted? Sure, but given her admitted behavior, I doubt she otherwise acted responsibly.

(47,503 posts)This is happening far too often - children, the elderly, the handicapped, pregnant women, etc.
Obviously most police officers have not been trained properly in regards to the use of taser guns. I can think of some very rare dangerous situations where a taser gun could save lives, but this is hardly one of them.
