Yellowstone Bison to Receive 330,000 Acres of Land to Roam Without Fear of Slaughter

A symbol of the American West, which at once was on the brink of extinction, is getting even more room to roam free at Yellowstone National Park.

On April 6, the Interagency Bison Management Plan (IBMP) Partners released a statement announcing they have approved opening up year-round habitat for the bison roaming Yellowstone National Park.

Since 2000, the herd has averaged more than 4,000 animals annually, sparking the need for population control, according to the National Park Service. A court-mandated settlement created the IBMP, which calls for a target population of 3,000 animals. In order to achieve this goal, slaughtering of the animals if they wandered outside of the park’s boundaries, which span Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, was permitted.

In the winter, the bison, also known as buffalo, roam outside of the park's boundaries in search for food, which has been problematic for residents and caused the states to implement methods of population control.

Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam...
