You can do it for free for the federal on Turbo Tax I did it in the last two years. I don't know about the state though...

An extension will grand you an extension to file your tax returns. It is not an extension to pay them.
If you owe money to the IRS you should pay it by April 15th.
If they owe you money, there is no penalty and even filing for an extension isnt really needed. Its still probably a good idea though.
I relalize without doing your taxes you may have no clue what you owe.
