South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley says her state doesn’t need transgender bathroom law

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2016/04/07/south-carolinas-gov-nikki-haley-says-her-state-doesnt-need-transgender-bathroom-law/

While North Carolina faces a mounting backlash over a law prohibiting transgender people from using bathrooms that don’t match the gender they were assigned at birth, the governor of its neighbor to the south says her state doesn’t need such a law.

A South Carolina lawmaker introduced a bill on Wednesday that would mandate that public restrooms and school bathrooms in the Palmetto State only be used based on the gender on a person’s birth certificate.

However, Gov. Nikki Haley (R) said Thursday that there had been no complaints that would suggest such a bill is needed.

“I don’t believe it’s necessary,” Haley, who has been touted as a possible vice presidential candidate, told reporters Thursday.

Her move to the relative center of their relative universe.
This, the rebel flag, her condemnation of Trump.
She really wanted to be Rubios Veep..would she settle for being Cruz VP?

has not moved to the center. She sees the writing on the wall. NC has businesses running out of there. Georgia Governor vetoed the bill after a long list of corporations threatened to move out. If this law passes it puts her in a no win situation. She will have to veto it or suffer a massive job loss in the state. If she vetoes it she pisses off the Jesus jumpers.

Pure pragmatic move. 1-She sees the shitstorm in NC over this and doesn't want to hurt industrial recruitment. 2-She knows the law will end up being unconstitutional. 3- This late in the legislative session it would need unanimous consent to move forward which is not possible.

She can't run again (until possibly 2020 for Lindsay Graham's seat).
As far as VP, she would bring nothing to a Cruz ticket - he would need a moderate not a Tea Party Southerner, and she and Trump don't like each other. I think she is hoping for a cabinet seat or to wait for a later election cycle.
Do be scared of her - she is a smart, sane version of Sarah Palin.

To the real TP, she's a snake. The term is thrown out too loosely. There are only three Tea Baggers in the Senate (Cruz, Paul, and Lee), and maybe two Governors (Kentucky and possibly Mississippi).

in the Governor's race in 2010 until Sarah Palin came in and endorsed her and she won a huge upset.
She won't consider any tax increase, turned down Medicaid expansion, etc.

She's carrying a few tea bags around.

Bright is an idiot and many fellow legislators don't like him. He is in fight for re-election. This is seen as political grandstanding.
I will be surprised if it passes. There will have to be intense oublic pressure. I said a while back that the only reason we are't quite as regressive as NC is that our GOP has several factions. They hate each other.

I just don't get it.

If you look more or less like a male - and I don't mean your genitals, but your overall appearance - use the men's bathroom. Whether you are XX or XY; whether you have a vagina or a penis; whether you feel like a boy or a girl, use the bathroom where people will accept you as their Brother In Peeing. (If you have a vagina, I suggest you use the stall and not the urinal so as not to invite comment. That's just smart.)

If you look more or less like a female - again, not your genitals, chromosomes, or inner child - use the women's bathroom. Who's going to ask you for proof of gender? Who's going to see whether you have a penis or not? (If you have a penis, change in a stall or behind a curtain so other women don't have to worry that you're a creep with bad intentions. That's just polite.)

If you look pretty androgynous, go where you feel comfortable, I guess.

FWIW: i have a child whose appearance is androgynous and who sometimes gets told they're in the wrong bathroom. It's never required anything more than a simple, "Nope, I'm not."

It assumes that it is possible to judge from someone's appearance what gender they identify as.

If a person looks like very much like a man, his presence in a women's bathroom will cause problems. If a bearded lumberjack looking fellah is standing around in the changing room at the Y, where all we women are accustomed to dressing and undressing in public, he (she) will make the bathroom extremely uncomfortable for the vast majority. Facts are facts: Males are generally bigger and stronger than females; females spend our whole fucking lives learning to protect ourselves against hte threat of males - in bars, in alleys, at parties, in bathrooms - who, yes, often leer at us and try to see us undressed, blah blah blah. And grown males in women's bathrooms generally have ill intent.

If you (not you personally... the general 'you') look like a male, I don't care if you "feel like a woman on the inside" or what your genitals look like. You look male, so that means you'll fit in just fine in the men's bathroom! So why come into the women's area and impose your male-looking self on women? Why would a male-looking person want to do that? Just, don't. Have some damn politeness.

Also remember:

Plenty of women are raised in a religious tradition where it's super-duper awful for their bodies to be seen by a male. (Here I am speaking of the Muslim girls and women I know, but I imagine it may be the same for some Christian sects). Letting male-looking people into the women's changing rooms is not fair to the shy-modest-religious types. It's also not fair to women who have been raped or traumatized and really don't want some male-looking person around while they take off their clothes. It basically means that some women will be chased out of the gym, so some male-looking people can choose the women's room over the (perfectly acceptable) men's room.

Etiquette says:
--if you can pass as a male, go to the men's bathroom. Don't make women uncomfortable.
-- if you can pass as a woman, go to the women's bathroom. Don't make men uncomfortable.
-- if you're in between, it's your pick. An androgynous person shouldn't cause a stir in either bathroom.
