Students at a Bronx, New York high school said they would stage a walkout rather than stick around for a visit from Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who they called misogynistic, homophobic, and racist.
Cruz was slated to visit the Bronx Lighthouse College Preparatory Academy on a Wednesday campaign stop, but the event was cancelled after students sent a letter outlining their concerns to the schools principal.
A group of students will be leaving during 4th period, as act of civil disobedience in regards to the arrival of Ted Cruz to BLCPA. We have all considered the consequences of our actions and are willing to accept them, the letter read. The presence of Ted Cruz and the ideas he stands for are offensive. His views are against ours and are actively working to harm us, our community, and the people we love.
The CEO of Lighthouse Academies agreed to cancel the visit after receiving the letter, school principal Alix Duggins told students.
I believe that I would not have been able to get the visit cancelled without your actions, Duggins said.

And yet, some here believe a President Cruz wouldn't be all that bad

(3,282 posts)That Cruz is the worst of the bunch in the GOP race right now. Don't get me wrong, I don't there's a good choice on that side. Any one of Cruz, Trump, or Kasich would be disastrous, but I honestly believe that Cruz with his anti-government dominionist Tea Party craziness would be the absolute worst possible choice on the right.

(10,952 posts)Besides is insane conservative doctrine which is harmful to anyone that doesn't adhere to his beliefs, he would be totally capable of not only tanking the US economy by the world economy as well because we live in a global economy. Anybody that thinks that the Cruz and the Republican Party cares about the masses needs to have their head examined.

(3,282 posts)It's the combination of Tea Party "government bad" supply-side screw-the-poor privatizing/deregulating economic policies with rapture-ready "destined by God" dominionist evangelical philosophy that makes me the most afraid. It's a truly horrifying combination.

(14,173 posts)This is kind of disturbing isn't it? It sounds like, if no threat like this walkout happened, the school would have been required to host this asshole against even the principle's objections. This walkout threat gave the principle the excuse to cancel it. But it makes you wonder how many other educational institutions are strong armed into having idiots like this preach their RW bs to their students.
