My queasy night at Lviv’s controversial ‘Jewish’ eatery

http://www.jta.org/2016/04/03/news-opinion/world/reporters-notebook-a-crazy-night-at-lvivs-controversial-jewish-eatery

At first glance Pid Zolotoju Rozoju, Ukrainian for “At the Golden Rose,” isn’t a particularly remarkable restaurant. But if “Jewish themed” makes you think of a kosher-style deli in Miami Beach or a Montreal bagelry, think again: Peddling Jewish food and culture with a combination of nostalgia and stereotypes, the eatery has been widely pilloried.

Since it opened in 2008, the restaurant has faced allegations that it crassly perpetuates anti-Semitic stereotypes, particularly in a place where Nazis and locals wiped out nearly all traces of Judaism – including the very synagogue after which it is named....

The joint is dark and small, with low ceilings, no windows and only nine tables. Its decor, such as it is, consisting of Judaica and Yiddish theater posters, could practically be considered tasteful, even if the restaurant serves non-kosher dishes such as rabbit kidneys.

But after sitting down and seeing the menu, I understood the uproar. There are no prices. That’s because “it’s Jewish tradition to haggle and bargain afterwards,” said my non-Jewish waiter, who instructed me to call him Moishe — though, when pressed, he revealed his name was Vlodymir. He then told me he’ll be right back and went into the kitchen.

Oy gevalt. "My queasy night at Birmingham's controversial 'black' eatery. The non-black waiters wear blackface and..."

Rabbit kidneys aren't kosher? Who knew?

Anti-Semitism is much more popular than many would like to believe, especially in some places. Ukraine is one of the worst places in regards to anti-Semitism, and has quite the long history of anti-Semitism, pogroms, and other bouts of Jew-hate.

It was interesting watching the propaganda coming out of Russia and Ukraine in regards to who was more anti-Semitic and actually doing anti-Semitic things.

Glad grandma and grandpa (may they rest in peace) saw fit to escape that shithole ages ago. Appears nothing has changed.

He and one brother got out.

Sixteen siblings, his parents, and everyone else he ever knew: murdered.

Of course, centuries of oppression and murder at the hands of Christians and Muslims surely has *nothing* to do with why Jews want a tiny little homeland which will always be Jewish, and therefore have a chance of be safe for Jews to live in.

Hey Christians and Muslims! You spent centuries conquering and murdering your way across four fifths of the globe - because that's what your god wants you to do. All because your religion is big on conquest and conversion and enslavement, you now live safe - and you number billions. So, all that God-blessed murdering really paid off for you guys. Congrats.

Tell you what: You can keep the whole rest of the world - all those lands where you've been hacking people to death for centuries while waving gospels and qurans and yelling "In the name of our Lord!" or "Allahu akbar!" - all those lands you claimed by murder, and by putting swords to people's throats and forcing them to pray like you do, or else to serve you as slaves, or to pay you fealty as their masters. You can keep all your Jesus-conquered lands and your Allah-conquered lands. You can keep putting gospels and qurans into the hands of the, what, five or six billion people currently living as christians or muslims, nearly all of whom are the descendants of your conquered slaves and victims.

But don't you turn to Israel with your smug conqueror's smiles, the blood of your murderous legacy soaking into the ground below your feet, the blood dripping from your mouths, and say, "You Jews! Look how greedy and grasping you are! How dare you claim that piece by the river. That's ours, too!"
