The BS and Lies brigade of Republicans-- who rushed through HB 2 in North Carolina on the pretense of needing
to protect women and children from male perverts who would invade bathrooms and locker
rooms posing as trans women--have been busted for pushing unfounded fears.
Politifact, in partnership with The News&Observer, did a fact check. Here's what they found:
A dozen state public school systems and dozens of college campuses also have ordinances banning discrimination against transgender people, including in bathrooms.
After spending hours combing through conservative blogs and family values websites dedicated to news about transgender bathroom ordinances, we were able to confirm three cases in the United States in the last 17 years in which a biological male was convicted of a crime that involved him in a womens bathroom or locker room and dressed as a woman.
Its unclear if any of the three identified as transgender women, but none of those cases happened in cities where it wouldve been legal for a transgender woman to use the womens room anyway. And none involved sexual assault or rape.
We havent found any instances of criminals convicted of using transgender protections as cover in the United States. Neither have any left-wing groups or right-wing groups.

in front of the media.
And at least we still have at least one newspaper in the state that is willing to do the investigative journalism
to dispute the Republican claim that danger lurks in the bathroom.

(61,695 posts)I've tried rationalizing with them, even explaining that given our ages, we've all very likely shared a public bathroom with a transgendered person without realizing it, and that it doesn't take a dress for a man to walk into a bathroom to assault a woman. But they'd rather be afraid.

Ask them why they are participating in ever more laws, ever more fear-mongering. Ask them what happened to "the land of the free, the home of the brave"?
Ask them why they want more and more government interference in ordinary lives.
And show them this cartoon:

I'd be more concerned with the fact that more US Senators have been arrested for sexual misconduct in restrooms.
Republicans have very dirty minds and an unhealthy obsession with sexual misconduct.

An appeal to the SCOTUS will be required to dump these laws. Already its too late to save the NC congressional Republican ticket from being tilted to the extreme right.

This has bad gender policing written all over it. Won't be just our trans sisters that suddenly are fearfull of either outing themselves after years of stealth or being arrested. But many Cis women who by some busybodies standard, insufficiently female, will be swept up as well. I feel sorry for all those who will suffer from the efforts of such bigots.
