http://www.addictinginfo.org/2016/04/06/watch-giddy-republican-congressman-confirm-voter-id-is-meant-to-hurt-democrats-video/For those wondering why this is a big deal, please remember that Republicans have repeatedly tried to keep this obvious fact under the radar. Thanks to Grothman the bell has been rung. The genie is out of the bottle. Republicans are using racist and discriminatory laws of their own design to keep Democrats away from the polls as a pillar of their election strategy.
When asked about a Republican nominees chances in a general election, Grothman didnt hesitate to give credit where it was due: His partys efforts to make it harder to vote.
Well, I think Hillary Clinton is about the weakest candidate the Democrats have ever put up and now we have photo ID. I think photo ID is going to a little bit of a difference as well.
This confirms what many political observers have been saying all along. The Republicans who push for stronger voter ID laws under the pretext to stop (nonexistent) voter fraud are using it as a cudgel to strongarm Democratic voters out of the voting booths. Given the fact that these laws almost invariably affect poor, often minority voters, this means two things: Democrats are being prevented for voting for the candidates who they would like to, and Republicans can continue to ignore the plight of the poor because they have been systematically disenfranchised.
Giddy? The guy from Rush is a Republican congressman?

The name is Geddy...a first name, coined because his mother (and father too, who passed when he was a kid) is a German Jew and Holocaust survivor. His real name is Gary, and when she would call out for him as a kid, it sounded like she was saying Geddy, not Gary, so his friends made it a nickname and it stuck. In Rush fandom he is known as Ged, or alternately, Dirk, another nickname that is particular to the world of Rush. And none of them are RWNJ's, either, and never actually were!

(10,497 posts)It still hasn't made a difference when SCOTUS has upheld many of them. We have had other Republicans let this cat out of the bag before and nothing happens. Nothing will happen either unless we come out in mass against them, or better yet, come out and insist on Publicly Funded Elections.

Note the use of the SMALL-d above - talking about those who support principles and policies that support and enhance democracy, and not necessarily the big-d Democratic party. Something tells me that folks like Rahm Emmanuel might support these ID laws.

(10,497 posts)That leaves me supporting the few Dems like Warren and also Bernie. It's the Democratic principles I support, and the Democratic Party no longer does.

(11,175 posts)It's perfectly consistent with the standard Republican drivel about voting fraud.
Do you remember 2012, when the "unskewed" polls showed Romney ahead, but then Obama won in the official count? Well, there are people on Free Republic who assert, with all sincerity, that voting fraud was the difference. There were busloads of illegal immigrants who were brought from one polling place to another, all voting fraudulently at each, and that's how Obama won. Some will add that it was orchestrated by ACORN, which of course had by then ceased to exist.
I'll note in passing that a lot of those people have guns. I wouldn't even trust them with a toaster.
Anyway, this Congresscritter's statement just riffs on the long-standing lie about voting fraud. Photo ID will make a difference because now all those immigrants can't cast multiple votes pretending to be someone else. The people who believe in the busloads-of-immigrants theory won't be swayed by this clip.
