That number is twice the population of white-tail deer. Only a few thousand gators are taken a year -- that number should increase the so the whole state doesn't become another Gator Farm tourist trap.

Since you were hoping to thin the human population -- as stated in your post -- you can do your part and swim in gator holes during May and June. They'll like the visit!

Although it is against state law some people visiting or living on waterways think it's fun to feed gators in the wild and take pictures to send back home. The gators naturally lose their fear of man and see them as a source for food. When they go after someone taking Fido for a walk they are reported and are hunted down and killed by licensed bounty hunters. Some times they are captured alive and released in a more remote location but it is more expeditious to kill them especially if they have eaten a pet. Plus the bounty hunter can sell the meat and the hide.

The perspective in the picture is suspicious looking, plus using the kid to gauge size makes the gator look bigger than it actually is.
