New SNAP laws requiring drug testing and work requirements are a travesty. Will the new rules mean seniors and vets have to take drug tests? Or will it mean low wage workers will also have to be drug tested?
These new SNAP laws are cruel and sadistic.

The End of Welfare as We Know It
Americas once-robust safety net is no more.
More than 13 million people received cash assistance from the government in 1995, before the law was passed. Today, just 3 million do.
Simply put, welfare reform worked because we all worked together, Bill Clinton, who signed into law welfare reform, or the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996, wrote in an op-ed in The New York Times in 2006. Clinton had campaigned on a pledge to end welfare as we know it and today it is all too apparent that he succeeded.

Today, in large part because of welfare reform, the safety netthe set of government efforts to come to the aid of the countrys citizens when they are down on their luck, much of which has existed since the Great Depressionis thin and getting thinner. And this thinning goes beyond welfare, which gives needy families cash support: On April 1, between 500,000 and one million childless adults will lose access to food stamps (officially known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP).

President Obama signs $8.7 billion food stamp cut into law
On Friday, President Obama added his signature to legislation that will cut $8.7 billion in food stamp benefits over the next 10 years, causing 850,000 households to lose an average of $90 per month. The signing of the legislation known as the 2014 Farm Bill occurred at a public event in East Lansing, Mich.
The food stamp cuts are one component of a massive omnibus bill which also includes billions of dollars in crop insurance and various other programs and subsidies involving American agriculture. Before he signed the legislation, President Obama praised it as an example of bipartisan problem-solving that would help create jobs and move the American economy forward.
Congress passed a bipartisan Farm Bill that is going to make a big difference in communities across the country, said the president.
Obamas remarks also focused heavily on economic inequality, which he has previously called the defining challenge of our time. The Farm Bill, he said, would give more Americans a shot at opportunity.

" a shot at opportunity.
The opportunity to feel what it is like to have your food taken away by a multi-millionaire. Character building.

(1,166 posts)targeting the disabled, seniors, poor. The targeting of the disabled and elderly is especially sadistic and has had horrendous effects in Britain. Globalization at work! Austerity for everyone! I wish more Americans got what is really going on. It's not called austerity here but the banking and corporate overlords are busily working to decimate the "developed world" the same way they've decimated the "developing world."
