From the GOP Frontrunner who says that no one respects women more than he does....
In comments to MSNBC's Chris Matthews set to air later on Wednesday, Trump reiterated his opposition to abortion rights, advocating for a ban on the procedure.
If abortion were illegal, Trump said, "there has to be some form of punishment" for women who undergo the procedure. But the candidate would not specify what punishment he favored, saying that would "have to be determined."
"They've set the law and frankly the judges, you're going to have a very big election coming up for that reason because you have judges where it's a real tipping point and with the loss of Scalia, who was a very strong conservative, this presidential election is going to be very important," Trump said, referring to the Supreme Court vacancy left by the death of anti-abortion rights Justice Antonin Scalia.

Donald Trump said Wednesday that he wants to ban abortions, and that women who get abortions illegally should be punished.
At a taping of an MSNBC town hall that will air later, host Chris Matthews pressed the Republican presidential front-runner Trump for his thoughts on abortion policy. Trump said he's in favor of an abortion ban, explaining, "Well, you go back to a position like they had where they would perhaps go to illegal places, but we have to ban it," according to a partial transcript from Bloomberg Politics.
Matthews asked if there would be a punishment for women who received abortions if they were made illegal. Trump responded, "There has to be some form of punishment." He elaborated that the punishment would have "to be determined" and the law will depend on the upcoming Supreme Court confirmation battle and the 2016 election.

There has to be some form of punishment, Trump said. For the woman? Matthews asked. Yeah, Trump said, nodding.
Trump said the punishment would have to be determined.

(12,655 posts)he has been prochoice for most of his life. pandering is my guess.
but as to the quote, i just wanted to be clear that he is not suggesting we start going to clinics with paddywagons. he said in the event it became illegal, there needs to be punishment. i am not defending that statement but it needs to be understood that he is not suggesting NOW that women be sent to prison. he says enough on his own, the press does not need to embellish.
and what is more, it will never come to be. roe is staying.

the bc thing always gets me. i mean, some people are against abortion, i can see that. but if they REALLY want no more abortions, they should be advocating for free and safe bc for anyone who wants it. then abortions truly could be reserved for emergency circumstances to save someones life. at least for the most part.

(26,549 posts)If you actually believe abortion is murder, it is rather weird to do nothing to the woman who arranged for and paid for the "murder".
"Only punish the doctors" comes from the "women aren't real people" side of the conservative movement.

(41,990 posts)He doesn't have an opinion. He doesn't have a stand. Chris Matthews gets on my last nerve, but I'll give him a lot of credit for not letting Trump maneuver his way out of it. When he got trapped into actually giving an answer he showed his absolute ignorance of what the (admittedly absurd, so I'm enjoying that being pointed out as well) GOP and Right to Life movement's stand on the issue is. His tap-dancing just might run out on him. LORD I hope so.
