this election. I would open day care centers in the most depressed areas of American cities. I would pay the teachers a decent salary with benefits. The schools would accept all children on a sliding scale; if one can't pay then one can trade services. All parents will be asked to donate 4 hours a month or more, if able, to help organize supplies, assist the teachers, teach an instrument, read stories, sing, teach a sport, etc. The school will have a garden, a library, an outside play area, musical instruments, a kitchen where wholesome breakfasts and lunches are served, and a quiet area to rest and read. The parents' service time, while not mandatory, will help the school and give back needed benefits to the students and the school. I so wish I had the money the Koch brothers do so I could make a difference to my country and to its children. What would you do if you had some of their wealth?

(16,588 posts)Half would be 30-40 million dollars. That's enough to run a single school district.... for about a month, or maybe even two.

(14,731 posts)based, not affiliated with anything. Based probably in small houses or other structures in the communities. We had those in the Houston area. Many were church based and ran on very little funds. Most are gone now because of urbanization; i.e we need these people out of here.

(16,588 posts)When they needed somebody to teach computers, they didn't hire a teacher who "taught keyboarding", they hired a freelance computer consultant who worked on systems part time, and taught computers part time.
It apparently makes a huge difference.
As far as church-based daycare, I find that morally offensive, but your idea seems interesting...
