Sen. Deb Fischer, R-Neb., has introduced the Strong Families Act along with Sen. Angus King, an independent from Maine. Their proposal would provide a 25 percent nonrefundable tax credit to employers who offer their workers paid family leave.
By softening the financial blow for employers, particularly those smaller employers who really struggle with this dilemma, we can help lower-wage or nonsalaried employees receive paid time off, Fischer said in a recent speech at the American Enterprise Institute.
Some advocates, however, say a more aggressive plan is needed. They include Heather Boushey of the Washington Center for Equitable Growth, who participated in a panel discussion following Fischers speech.
Relying on a voluntary tax credit from an employer? Boushey questioned. Thats not good enough.
