Our beloved Chi, who wanted nothing more than world domination. Passed away today. He lived a full, and happy life of 18 years. In his spare time, he would troll us for peanuts.
Miss you buddy.

(11,076 posts)What a cutie. RIP Chi.
I've been thinking about bartcop and MWO a lot these days too.
We could use a voice of reason about now! Not to jump on Chi's memorial but I want to add that the responses to Bart's post are so civil and caring. When you look down the line you see Hill and Bern supporters agreeing on something. Kinda nice! Have a good one!

(2,535 posts)As for little Chi ~ I have been "babysitting" a chinchilla for the past 4 years and I just love the little guy ~ though I am terrified of him and he is terrified of me. Still he begs me for a little raisin and what can I say? I just wish we could cuddle more but I suspect he came from one of those 'chilla mills and was not held much and I do not know how old he is. But we get along, he looks at me with those big eyes and little feet clinging on the his cage and what can I do? Why give him a raisin of course!
Funny you should say that you did about Bartcop because on the Bill Press chat just this morning I was lamenting how much I missed him. I am sure he would have LOVED to have some fun with T-Rumpf. RIP Mr Bartcop!

(34,136 posts)I still miss the chinchillas we had when I was a kid. They got out of everything Dad built for them to live in but they were so cute and cuddly. We had three - Mama, Papa and Baby (we were kids :shrug . We never knew how old Mama and Papa were. Baby eventually escaped and even though all the neighborhood kids hunted for him we never found him or his body. I like to think he lived out his life in freedom even if he was lonely.

(2,472 posts)chinchillas could live for 18 years. And I know just how you're feeling because my favorite cat died a week ago. He was only four and a half and he wasn't sick, so I have no idea why. It's always heartbreaking and they always take a piece of our souls when they leave us, so my heart goes out to you.
When one of my sons was little he asked for a chinchilla. I put him off several times and then one day he was watching tv and came running to the kitchen in hysterics and yelled "Mom, we have to go to the pet store RIGHT NOW and get my chinchilla before they MAKE A COAT out of him!" I guess he didn't know people did that before he saw it on television. We had lots of pets but we never did get a chinchilla.

(205,731 posts)I once thought of getting a chinchilla, have had many varied pets in my life and chinchillas are so cute (and soft), but I had no idea where to ever find one. If I had only known that they could live for 18 years, I would have looked harder! He sounds like the perfect pet and he was incredibly fortunate to have found you...

(10,201 posts)Chichi was my wife's high school graduation present to herself. I met him when he was just 3.
A little bit about chinchillas if you're thinking of having one as a pet.
-DO NOT FEED THEM PEANUTS!!! The little folks cannot process the fat in the peanut. We preferred to give him raisins, apples, lettuce, and oranges. The sugar rush from the fruit would have him running on his wheel (turd tosser) at warp levels of speed.
A note on the "turd tosser"... Chinchillas poop... Constantly.
They are a rather hypoallergenic pet. As far as all mammals go, they have the 2nd most dense fur on the planet, only being topped by the otter, so there is practically zero dander. They take baths in dust never water. The dust would make me sneeze, but other than that, he never aggravated my asthma.
There is no solid consensus on their average life span. Some say 9 to 13, others 12 to 20, and others 20+. Each chin is different. We were lucky.
If it's chew-able, they will. Especially wood. Their teeth are always growing, so they need wood, lava rocks, etc to chew on.
They do not take kindly to warmer temperatures. They are from the high desert of Peru... We found that at around 78 degrees he would start to feel sick. So you will need to leave the AC ($$$) on for your little buddy.
Their cages should have solid floors, not grates. Their little fingers and toes are fragile, and they can get them caught in the gaps.
ZOMGZ THEY ARE SOOOO SOFT!!!!
He liked to nibble on my facial hair.
You will lose a staring contest, they rarely blink.
If they don't like something they are eating, they will throw it. It's hilarious.
A chinchilla holding and eating a large tortilla chip is funny as hell too.
Anyway... Last night was a bit rough for my wife. She handled it well, however I could tell she was upset. Our other two fluffy buddies (cats) I think could sense that as well. They were confused by the absence of Chi's cage, and looked a bit lost. We were lounging on the couch last night, and both buddies jumped up on and cuddled with my wife for a few hours while she fell asleep. It was sweet.
We are looking forward to our next Chin, who will most likely be joining our family soon. I appreciate the love you all gave, and may our next buddy be just as big of a troll.
Thank you,
Glass

(8,175 posts)Now I wish I had. I also didn't know they lived that long. I loved my ferrets, which also poop a lot, and you need to be able to handle that, as they need to be able to run free and get a lot of exercise. A lot of people don't know what they are getting into when taking on a unique pet. I didn't have to worry about cats finding loose ferrets, as the ferret is a predator and the cats leave them alone. I'm thinking you had to watch the cats carefully around Chi?
I'm glad you are getting another one. I know how hard it is to lose a little guy who has lived such a long and happy life.
I have never felt a chi's fur...I know it has to feel soooo good. I have some pretty soft-furred cats and can't even imagine anything softer than that.
RIP little Chichi. You were one of the lucky ones. You were well loved!
