Three contractors appear for briefing on plans to remove New Orleans Confederate monuments

... None of those representatives identified themselves during or after the meeting, likely apprehensive about the negative attention already directed at businesses that have expressed interest in the work.
The plan to remove the statues of Robert E. Lee from its pedestal on Lee Circle, Jefferson Davis from a stand on Jefferson Davis Parkway and P.G.T. Beauregard from the entrance to City Park was approved by the New Orleans City Council on a 6-1 vote in December. Since then Mayor Mitch Landrieus administration, which pushed the project, has been trying to get a firm on board despite heavy opposition from groups opposed to the removal of the monuments.
While Mondays pre-bid conference a voluntary opportunity for firms to get questions answered about the project included standard discussions of the work involved, it was also clear that the fight over the statues weighed on the minds of those bidding.
One potential bidder asked if it was OK to do the work in the middle of the night or early in the morning, times when protests or other opposition would be unlikely. That could be arranged, said officials, who stressed that the city would be providing security whenever necessary ...
