(10,718 posts)with (most importantly) a single mind. The catholic church hates this, women hate that, Irish people think something, Jews think something else, republicans feel this way on an issue, etc...
Hate itself, feeling itself, only exists within an individual mind, and generally speaking the variance between individuals is greater than the variance between groups. So statements like "Islam hates us" are inherently imaginary.
The purpose they serve is to create a feeling of "us versus them", a feeling that strengthens in a person the feeling of community with a select group (which feeling humans as social animals are dependant on) by emphasizing the difference or threat from some other group. The whole thing pretty effectively defines the word "bigotry".
