Why would a racist conservative choose Cruz over Trump?

Just trying to hone my political science skills and it seems illogical. Somebody I know. Voted in a major caucus somewhat recently. Religious but not a fundamentalist. Certifiably poor, believes "the system is rigged" but is die-hard anti-union and has a very low opinion of black people other than prominent black conservatives. I can smoke him in an economic debate and he knows it, but I play it cool and "foggy neutral" so to not blow my cover. I'm trying to fracture him and steer him toward the left and can see cognitive dissonance make him sheepish now and then. I'm trying to analyze this to wrap my head around the dynamic even if it repulses me. It doesn't make sense.

I'm serious. Any thoughts?
