What I saw on the marquee of a local Presbyterian Church

(remembering that Trump claims to be Presbyterian)

This church has flown a rainbow flag near its main door for years. The day after Gov. Dayton signed the marriage equality act their marquee read "Love wins! Ask us about your August wedding." (The law took effect Aug 1).

Today as I drove past it read "Presbyterians don't build walls".

2. He appears to be ignorant of his church's sacraments.

“When we go in church and I drink the little wine, which is about the only wine I drink, and I eat the little cracker — I guess that’s a form of asking forgiveness,” Mr. Trump said."

I'm not certain he really understands the point of Communion. I bet he can't even name Presbyterians' other sacrament besides Communion.

I'm relieved the Elders are working to eliminate the damage he's inflicting.

3. Not only that...

Most Presbyterian churches use grape juice instead of wine. So obviously Trump has never taken communion at a Presbyterian church. You know, I'm very surprised that evangelicals aren't rejecting Trump en masse for claiming he's a Christian but knows nothing about the religion's single most important sacrament. Oh, that's right - I forgot that their Jesus is Supply-Side Jesus, whose most important sacrament is money.

participated in services where there was mostly wine, but also juice was available. Now, gluten-free bread and wafers are available for the Host in many churches. I'm in another denomination now, and it's only grape juice. They decided "why bother?" with the wine.

choosing which bits to follow. Jesus said 'call no man Father' but the largest denomination insists you call all their clergy Father. Pick and choose. Hillary has cited St Paul as her reason for objecting to LGBT equality, St Paul says women must not hold any power over men nor ever speak in public. Clearly she picks the 'gays are bad' verses while totally rejecting the long passages that say her entire career is heresy. Obviously I think Paul was full of bitterness and shit but she says that she follows his teachings about me, just not the ones about her.

Jesus said never, ever pray in public out loud. Only hypocrites do that, he said very clearly and he gave detailed instructions for how to go about one's prayers in extreme privacy. The entire Christian faith is centered around public prayers made by rote, out loud. Now Jesus said only hypocrites do that. If he's wrong about that, how is he divine?

Jesus said never to make an oath of any kind. No before God, nor man. Of course our Christian Presidents honor Jesus by swearing an oath to God between two globally televised verbally expressed prayers.

So getting the details right is just not a part of Christianity, it is all about crafting one's own desires and bigotries into a set of ritualized excuses. What Jesus said is, very obviously, fully optional for all sects. What Jesus said, not really important compared to what his 'believers' want to say and want to do. 'Call me Father, then we'll pray for the crowd, your wife can preach to them and then you can swear the oath! For Jesus who said not to do any of that! We are the Christians, he's just the Christ and he's been dead for a fuck of a long time, call me Father!!!'

7. Very true. I'd like to see more churches support choice publicly.

And the separation of church and state, and keeping churches out of schools.

Especially "under god" in the school pledge.

That's when I'll consider church "lite" innocuous.

11. The wall referred to here is obviously the one Trump wants built on the Mexican border.

As to the wall of separation between church and state, a) most churches wouldn't build that wall and b) it's not the place of the church to build that wall, it's the place of the people and c) in some interpretations of the First Amendment, that wall already exists ... unfortunately that's a theory not held by all SC justices. And the tax-exempt status of churches kind of contradicts it.

But clearly the poster is referring to a liberal church that opposes Trump's promise of building a wall on the Mexican border. Clearly, since that's a current topic of discussion.
