It can't be the lake, can it? I thought it was too deep to freeze (unlike Erie)

What you are seeing over them is "lake effect snow" forming.

Unlike last year, Lake Superior isn't frozen, this year. Last winter was the coldest of my lifetime.
This latest storm was a real butt kicker. Because it isn't as cold, this storm made the heaviest and wettest snow I've seen, in years. And it came right on the heel of a really bad wind storm so a lot of us really feel that our beloved Mitten is in need of a bad weather break.
