If a street dog or cat could read a calendar, it would circle in red the last Tuesday in February. Its World Spay Day, when volunteers round up stray animals in an effort to humanely control the feral populations.
The campaign was started in 1995 by the Doris Day Animal Foundation, with the goal of reducing the number of pets euthanized in animal shelters. That year, 17 million unadopted dogs and cats were euthanized in the United States. Thanks in part to World Spay Day, the number is down to 2.7 million.
Globally, dog and cat overpopulation is still a problem. The 600 million feral cats take a heavy toll on bird populations. And the 300 million stray dogs spread diseases, like rabies, and attack people. Which is why the Doris Day Animal Foundation has partnered with The Humane Society to turn World Spay Day into a global initiative.

(205,857 posts)Don't imagine you remember, but I sought your advice when I found a tiny kitten in a grocery store parking lot a year-and-a-half ago. With help, I managed to catch him, but he wasn't initially the cuddliest of pets. But he has really come around with time and affection, is nearly a lap cat now, though he hasn't entirely gotten over his tendency to bite. And he was neutered at exactly the same week his vet recommended, not to mention that he's grown up into a really beautiful cat!

(56,177 posts)He looks like Boyd, one of the kittens from a group of 4 from last spring...big fluffy tail...the others were socialized quite easily, but he hissed and hissed until one day he let me approach and pet him...now he's a cuddler, too!

(205,857 posts)I had no idea what he looked like until I actually caught him, could only see his eyes in the dark. But he has grown up to be so beautiful, reminds me of the beloved cat I got my DU screen name from, and he seems to really like my dog who is fine with everybody, not so much other cats, but he's still quite young.
Early days, when he held still for more than a minute:

(56,177 posts)When kittens are introduced to dogs at a young age they usually take...they haven't quite figured out there's a difference between cats and dogs and if the dog is friendly, they're pals for life!

(205,857 posts)All I cared about at the time was saving from living in a grocery store parking lot and they were doing construction there, besides. But I really lucked out and his temperament has certainly improved over time. One odd thing he does, though (besides the tendency to bite), is that he seems to love water, will splash in the dog's water dish, given the chance.
And my dog was fostered at the Animal Emergency Clinic, so he has no issues with other animals, though he will let Felix know he's had enough when he's pounced on for the tenth time...

(22,128 posts)We had 14 cats spayed and neutered a few months ago, all barn cats. They were from 3 females that showed up pregnant. They also have all their shots, wormed, etc. Very socialized (they follow me everywhere), and all have names. My personal crusade for, "Enough Kittens Already!"
