It was supposed to be an epic battle over the fate of Roe v. Wade.
Next week, the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in Whole Womans Health v. Hellerstedt, a challenge to Texass ambitious anti-abortion law HB2. If this law is upheld a very real possibility in a conservative Supreme Court Roe v. Wade would have most likely remained alive in name only. States would gain sweeping new power to shut down abortion clinics, so long as they dressed up the laws they enacted to end access to abortion as health regulations.
Except that opponents of abortion no longer have the fifth vote they need to gut Roe. Justice Antonin Scalias death means that Roe shall live at least another year. Whether it survives past next year, however, could very well be decided by whoever gets to fill Scalias seat.
Eyes on the prize, folks.

(26,060 posts)or donnie trump (who could pick cruz) for the top court doesn't give you pause, frankly, you don't know anything about how our government runs. Besides, you can stop putting words into people's mouths - nobody used the word fear but you. Try disgust, try unthinkable.

(37,748 posts)I think you're confusing fear with a rational cost/benefit analysis.
Though I realize bias often compels us to inaccurately infer meanings if the original doesn't validate our own favoritisms, it helps to use rational thought as a tool to avoid doing so.

(65,136 posts)Didn't want you to be disappointed.
Me, i'm voting dem because the republicans have been wrong all 41 years of my adult life about virtually everything they've ever said and done.

But I'll leave it at that, it's time to feed the unicorn and store the ice cream.

(26,060 posts)is entirely your problem. I have NEVER bashed Bernie and I've never said one word slamming honesty and integrity. Honestly, why are so many Bernie supporters so freeking sensitive about this? All I'm saying is that with Scalia dead, it's become MUCH more important to remember which is the only branch of government that has ZERO oversight, they have the last word on all laws and it's a lifetime appointment and it's vital we make sure a republican doesn't replace him. What part of that do you have a problem with?

(26,060 posts)supposed to mean something? Coughing fit? WTF are you talking about? Are you going to answer my question about understanding how important the high court is or are you more worried about my imaginary illnesses?

(17,796 posts)and to your question, the SC forms the third leg of our government, I said that's fairly important. Unfortunately like the rest of our government it's completely dysfunctional. So what's more important to you? Continuing a government that doesn't work or starting work on changing that?
Would it ruin the plot if I said that I know your answer? Once again, have a lovely day.

(53,975 posts)Which is important enough for me (I have always been pro-choice), but I also look at it like my marriage is on the line...because it is! Never mind that people can still legally discriminate against LGBT people in housing and employment in over half of the sates of the US. The recent efforts by states looking to halt, or even repeal marriage equality is more than enough for me to say; "I don't give a fuck who's running as the democratic choice...there is NOT going to be a republican in the White House!"

(26,060 posts)With Scalia's death women's rights, gay rights, voting rights, civil rights - all these issues are now front and center. Even before his death my issue was the supreme court - it's the only real lasting legacy any President has - anything else can get undone by a subsequent president or congress. But these lifetime appointments are the real thing. scalia was a thorn in my side for almost 3 decades.
