My father was excited when the KKK marched in his small town in PA when he was 5 years old

despite the fact that his family was one of six Jewish families in that town. All he saw in his childish point of view was a parade in an otherwise sedate and quiet town. He even followed them on their parade route. As an adult, he didn't see anything wrong with the event.

Fast forward to the political rise of Donald Trump.

The Trump supporters and voters are my father as a five year old. They have become part of Trump's political reality show. They go to his rallies and get entertainment. It's a happening. It's a recreation of Don Rickles who insults everyone who doesn't love Trump. Who knew politics could be this much fun?

My father passed almost two years ago at 92. He spent more time with FOX News than his family. Were he still alive, he'd be invigorated by Trump. He'd be five years old again. He'd be following the parade . . . . .

The only good thing is that most of them have never voted and never will.

Because I didn't know any better and the other kids gave me one. My mother promptly threw it in the trash and gave me a stern lecture (that a 7-year-old could understand) about why Nixon was most definitely NOT the one. My mother would have washed Adlai Stevenson's feet with her hair if she could have. (Yes, I know Stevenson was from an earlier era, but that's how committed a Democrat my mother was). It was my first political lesson, and I learned it well.

Some people can evolve.
