(21,629 posts)Odd that I've never once seen it flown over a church. The Vatican has its own flag. They don't fly the confederate flag either. I though the confederate flag represented a political organization, not a religion. Clearly I've been misinformed.

(118,350 posts)The "confederate flag" she and her son adore is almost certainly the flag of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia
And it's unlikely that anything like that ever flew in New Mexico, since the secession of "confederate Arizona" and confederate efforts to seize the rest of New Mexico territory had all collapsed by mid-1862, with the withdrawal of the "confederate Arizona" government, first to Texas and later even further east
The CSA itself didn't incorporate the flag of the Army of Northern Virginia into the corner of its official flag until 1863
The ordinance secession for "confederate Arizona," passed at Mesilla (now in NM) on 16 March 1861, rather tellingly says "... we will not recognize the present Black Republican Administration, and .. we will resist any officers appointed to this Territory ..." --- and here "Black Republican" was exactly the appeal to racial prejudice that it seems to be
Her notion that the confederates are somehow the true Christians, of course, is the product of many years of evolving propaganda, stretching back to Southern efforts to find religious justifications of slavery and passing through the Civil Rights era, when rightwing reactionaries like Jerry Falwell sought to oppose integration by equating it with attacks on Christianity by "godless Communists"

(7,512 posts)To some people it doesnt mean a thing, it doesnt bother them one way or another. To others its a concern, Brown said in that statement. The Confederate flag is a symbol of many things and not all of them are negative.
See, that last part (to me) is just giving people an excuse to fly and hide behind this racist/treasonous piece of shit flag.
