Suitor on Tinder App Is Accused of Theft From 2 Women

The women liked the way the man looked in his picture on the dating app Tinder, so they swiped right to indicate interest in getting together. He said that his name was Tristan Acocella, that he was in finance and that his sister had cancer.

The man dated the first woman for three months, starting in July. He was soon borrowing money from her, always offering an urgent excuse, the authorities said; he once told the woman his wallet had been stolen and he needed to pay for his sister’s treatment. When his debt reached $14,000, he repaid the woman with a bad check.

A few weeks later, the second woman fell for a similar story, court documents show. The man, whose real name is Brandon Kiehm, asked her for a loan because, he said, his mother had cancer and he needed to pay for her treatment. The woman gave him $12,000, prosecutors said; he gave her bad checks as well.

Mr. Kiehm, 35, of Roosevelt Island, was charged on Tuesday in State Supreme Court in Manhattan with grand larceny, identity theft and scheme to defraud.
