Contaminated Flint water among most expensive in the U.S.: report
Residents of Flint, Michigan, one of the poorest cities in the United States, paid some of the nation's highest water bills even as the city failed to treat drinking water properly, leading to lead contamination, according to a report released on Tuesday.
The annual water bill in Flint as of January 2015 was $864.32 for a household using 60,000 gallons a year, said Washington-based advocacy group Food & Water Watch.
The rate remained high compared with many other cities even after a judge ordered Flint to reduce its rates by 35 percent and to stop charging a service fee.
The study - which looked at the 500 largest community water systems in 48 states - showed that private, for-profit water systems generally charged more than the public water systems that prevail around the country. Flint's water system is public.

(11,862 posts)Here in Detroit auto insurance (no fault) is based on the absolute fact that your car WILL be stolen no matter where you park it..on the street, in a garage or in a secured back yard.
The tax on property has NOTHING to do with it's value...only how long you have lived there....every transfer of property...even if it is LESS than the previous cost goes UP!
AND CORRUPTION...from the highest to the lowest...Kwami Cilpactrick (sic) was sentenced his mom stayed in government...
I was approached by some clerk to show (in an envelope) my appreciation that she helped me......HER FRICKING JOB!
And when we moved into our house..the electricity was RIGGED! We had no idea and spent 3 days IN THE DARK, WHEN ALL WE HAD TO DO WAS CUT ON A LIGHT!!!
Our heat was also free, which unfortunately was gas which my husband is afraid of...since so many houses in Detroit went BOOM...probably from illegal gas connections?

(37,573 posts)you would pay about $300 for that much water in my town.
That also seems like a lot of water for one household to use. I use maybe 10,000 gallons a year. I am charged for 18,000 gallons. As such, it turns out I am paying more per gallon than they are. For 10,000 gallons I am paying $147.12. Multiply that by 6 and I would be paying $883 for 60,000 gallons.
Because I subsidize big users, I end up paying a higher rate per gallon.
And unlike somebody who is using 60,000 gallons of water. I can NOT reduce my water bill by reducing my water consumption.
