The last five years of DNC leadership and campaign strategy have been abysmal on this front. The same authority that gives the President the right to nominate also gives the Senate the right to deny it, let a Republican Senate run things and this is what we get.

And it is the Senate's duty to debate and vote on it.

I want to change the thought memes on this. It's a duty, not a right.

The constitution says "shall" not "should if its convenient."

The President is supposed to nominate candidates for vacancies on the Supreme Court. It's part of his job; nobody else can do it under the Constitution. Republicans are perfectly free to object to the candidate, but they don't get to freestyle the Constitution just because the President isn't to their liking.
