Not being a Scalia fan by a long shot, I can't believe I'm writing this, but how can people jump on the political train before the body gets cold. Regardless of how he voted, the things he said, his influence on America; the man served America and he deserves a modicum of respect. Damn! They had not even pulled the sheet over his body before Ted Cruz and some airhead assistant to a congressman starts talking about his replacement, and who can and can not participate in the process. They are so eager to trash President Obama that they disrespect their own people. This crap is sadder than sad.
I offer my condolences to the Scalia family. Death is difficult. Sudden death is an emotional shock that takes time to accept.

(23,867 posts)I leaped up and danced around the room. Then I felt guilty. Not.
I guess I should add- we didn't do that when Nelson Mandela died. Scalia represents massive suffering.

OTOH the right wing conservative Repugs (redundant I know) immediately used his death to make political points.

(7,335 posts)Hopefully they are just gathering as a family and dealing with it themselves.
I can't imagine this was that much of a shock to them though, considering his probable health status (just guessing that he may have had blood pressure, cholesterol, heart, diabetes? issues. GUESSING only.) On the other hand, maybe he was in perfect health and this was a complete shock?

(4,213 posts)You are right, and the first person I thought about was RBG. I knew she was a very good friend of Scalia, and that the news would come hard for her. She put out a lovely and beautiful statement, full of class.
My heart goes out to people who are genuinely hurt by his passing, those that knew him, such as RBG. The pain of losing someone is difficult, even if that person was Scalia. I can't imagine what it is like to watch the world basically jump into the politics over his death before his body is even cold. It must be painful to watch while you are mourning.
However, it would be a lie to say that my mind didn't immediately move to the politics of his death. Obviously, I hated the man. I am glad he is dead. In fact, I wish he would have died sooner, during a time when Democrats held a majority in the Senate under Obama. I likely would not have moved so quickly to openly talk about the politics of his death had the Republicans not made the first move. I mean, holy shit, almost as soon as we got the announcement, Mitch put out a statement saying that he wouldn't even consider an Obama nominee. Then we have the universal Republican reaction from the candidates themselves... Had they taken a different tact, asked for time to mourn his death, I likely would have given it.

If Ginsburg died, the right wing would be having a field day.

(8,965 posts)Demanding that Obama cease and desist from nominating a successor during the remainder of his term. If that is not politicizing a situation, then please provide a better example. At any rate, and not surprisingly, the absurd remarks made early-on by McConnell and assorted conservative talking heads opened the floodgates for heated dialogue.

(63,221 posts)The disgust that people feel for him and the joy they take from his death is exclusively the result of his hateful, bigoted career. His family's sorrow is worth noting, perhaps, but a terrible man is dead at long last, and that is cause for rejoicing.
I will feel sorrow for his family when his rulings no longer harm anyone, because as long as that harm continues, Scalia's cruel agenda is alive, and he is still deserving of our scorn.

(30,676 posts)ok, maybe she wanted to give birth 9 times. And maybe he wasn't away at work 95% of the time. God bless those poor bereaved people. I'm sure they didn't hate their father like I did. Though( with all due respect) I can't imagine how that happened.
