Obama will nominate someone with impeccable qualification to the Supreme Court

It will be someone that can be a truly fair and impartial jurist whom most Americans will be comfortable with, it will not be a strong liberal leaning appointee. Obama understands that the issues we here care about will easily stand up to review from a truly unbiased judge. When one is on the right side of history one has no need to put a finger on the scale of justice. By not appointing a political justice he will have boxed in the blue state senators who are up for reelection. The Repubicans will then be on the defensive try to stall till the election and trying to explain why they do not want to do their job.

While many will want a clearly left leaning judge to be nominated that's not going to happen Obama will take the high ground with his desire to depoliticize the Court.

Just saying, I could be wrong but this seem to be the way Obama rolls.

If they stall the nomination pre-election, they know they can't stall it post-election. So, do you take a perceived moderate now, or a liberal then? Do they want to gamble on that? I don't think so. There will be flapping and fussing, and deals made as to who will vote Yea and Nay given the mood in their state and their election prospects. Then, the Senate will confirm the nominee, who will probably be Sri Srinivasan - a guy everybody could live with.

97 senators, including those up for reelection, voted unanimously to appoint him the the DC Circuit Court three years ago.

Some significant majority of the US population can't name a Supreme Court Justice, and probably has little idea of what the Supreme Court actually does, and how consequential it is.

Even if the Senate was under Democratic control, there wouldn't be confirmation hearings until July or so.
