Then the republicans will have to confirm him/her or spend a lot of time explaining to Hispanic voters why they didn't. John McCain is up for re-election, a Hispanic nominee could put him in a tight spot. We could call this "The Clarence Thomas Maneuver." Except of course Obama's nominee would actually be qualified for the job.

(14,627 posts)Obama has the right to choose the most qualified person and someone who represents the populace. Black women have been overlooked in our society, as have been gay people. Fuck the republicans.

(17,064 posts)I don't think Obama will nominate a Justice just to drive a wedge...he'll nominate a solid candidate, imo.
Whether theyre Latino, Black, white, female, male, LBGT,....all fine by me. Has a Native American ever been nominated? That would be a solid and long overdue choice.
