The GOP has essentially given up on winning the Presidency. They are going to put the big bucks into holding Congress.
Now Scalia is dead and Obama is going to put up a candidate that the Senate says 'he doesn't have a right to' and will block until Obama leaves office.
This is the attitude that will be in headlines for the rest of the year.
They are going lose the Senate. We are going to win the White House, and we are going to gain House seats, if not the House itself.

(54,405 posts)Of course, a friendly Supreme Court could accelerate that, which is why it is so important for Obama to start the process like yesterday, and put the Republican Senate in an impossible situation. Refuse to confirm, or even refuse to hold confirmation hearings, or obstruct the nomination, and every Republican candidate/incumbent gets hit with it every day for the rest of the campaign season. On the other hand, if they vote to confirm, it would be like the Dodo bird voting to be hunted into extinction.

I really do think it was the banishment of pork/ear marks that turned congress into the monster it is. The sane leadership had no way to punish the crazies so the billionaires were able to take full advantage of the situation.

It will be interesting to see what happens after november, if Dems recapture the Senate and keep the WH, if they decide that Obama's choice is better than what they might get with a new set of senators and President.
